I've heard they exist...but where??

I need to install a newer radio in a '59 356. Not a problem other than the car is originally a 6volt. I've asked around and there is rumor of a device that converts 6 to 12 volts. Everywhere I look I get steered somewhere else. All Electonics say's Pep Boys, Pep Boys say's Auto Zone, Auto Zone says All Electronics and so on. I stopped by a radio Shack also but I got tired explaining what a "volt" was no less how many come in a wire.
So where in SoCal do you think I might be able to find one of these electrical unicorns?

You'd need a transformer, no? Seems like a DC step-up transformer is a simple device. Try Mouser Electronics (mouser.com)?

I'm no electronics expert, but I think just a 2:1 transformer to step up the voltage to 12-14 and depending on how dirty signal is, maybe a Voltage regulator/capacitor combo in order to clean things up.

found a schematic, but 800mA probably isn't enough

JC Whitney has 2 6->12 inverters available on their website. Also, did you see the recent Registry article about using an iPod or other mp3 player in a 356? Lots of threads about it in my archive (see sig)
