If Porsche was to Build a Drum Kit

Not for the faint of heart - only to be operated by highly skilled drummers;

(this is actually a Terry B kit!)

Sonic dB 03-03-2005 08:58 PM

bah...John Bonham just needed a 4 piece kit with big kick drum and a couple of cymbals... mic'ed by one kick mic and an overhead pair in the hallway of a dilapidated British farmhouse estate.

Looks like something Dave Weickl would play.... with ease.

I aggree............some of the best drummers I've heard (rock and jazz) had the least amount of equipment.

Oh Haha 03-04-2005 06:30 AM

SWEEEEEEEET!!
Looks like something I drew in art class many moons ago.

I can 't imagine schlepping that from gig to gig.....

azasadny 03-04-2005 05:09 PM

I have a video clip of Terry Bozzio playing a set that looks just like that one. See the Slingerland "Buddy Rich kit" in the back of the photo? I've always wanted to add a gong to my set as it's the only thing missing (besides talent)...

M.D. Holloway 03-05-2005 07:34 AM

The kit pictured was built for Terry - I'm sure he had several lackys and a bus to hawl it around. When I saw him, he was setting up a mini monster by him self. I thought that was pretty cool for a guy like him to do.
Buddy Rich's kit was cool, that was like mine - I think Hal Blaine was as good if not better that Buddy. Buddy had a great markteer, Hal was too busy with the "brass".

Hey Mike,
I just noticed the line you added to your signature.
Very cool, man.
I like throwing lines from movies or songs at people just to see if they get it. Most don't.:)

I went through the thousand piece drumkit phase. I went back to a basic five piece and found my playing improved.

Jared at Pelican Parts 03-06-2005 03:33 PM

my cousin has the Bonham vistalite re-issue kit. DAMN that thing is LOUD.

impressive, but a good drummer dont need all that...

Victor 03-06-2005 05:02 PM

Reckon this one can play upside down like the one used in the 80's by hairspray and spandex bands like Bon Jovie and Motley Crue?

azasadny 03-06-2005 05:18 PM

My '79 Slingerland 12pc set is birch wood shell finished with a cherry stain on it. It's incredibly loud and I play the Roland electronic set most of time to avoid "neighbor problems"...

Hey Hey Victor,
Tommy Lee is,IMO, one of the best around. Nevermind the non-music crap he found. His live performances were(are) awesome.

Jared at Pelican Parts 03-06-2005 05:29 PM

Airto Moreira, now theres a drummer

I was not for one second suggesting that 80's metal and playing upside down where uncool. http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/drummer.gif

Couldn't agree more - Some drummers like Terry, Billy Cobham, Neil Pert and several others go for the monster sets (IMO) for two reasons - 1) the crowd loves them so it is good marketing and 2) these guys seem to be pressing the limits of drumming in that they want to get molodic and not just be in the background. You will hear these guys get syncupated (sp) and experiment with polyrythms. Mucho drums and cymbels and all sorts of other percussion items can help to hit that end.

I like the kid who bangs on the 5gl plastic pail for pocket change. What movie was that in - I remeber it was at the beginning of a movie. Kid was about 11, in NYC subways or Central Park?

Victor 03-06-2005 07:04 PM

Years ago there used to be a homeless looking busker in the city (Melbourne). He had plastic buckets and some trash can lids etc and sounded bloody unreal. From time to time he used to team up with this long-haired madman in a wheelchair who played bagpipes and wore a kilt. Very “long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n roll”.

To properly amplify that kit you need an amp that goes to eleven....

Eric Coffey 03-08-2005 10:35 PM

A bit over the top, but yes, DW (Drum Workshop) is the Porsche of drum kits!
