What Kind of TV should I buy

My 15 year old Sony 32" XBR has become socialist....it's not working anymore....So instead of trying to fix it I will be needing to go buy a new TV set... I kind of like the big screen LCD DPL tech ones....BUt what about Brands etc??? And what do I need to know...no having bought a TV in 15 years...

Sounds to me like the TV in question was acting like its owner.

Any TV without Tivo is a sad TV indeed.

There is a whole forum devoted to this general topic:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=40

After a few weeks there, here what I decided. First there is not a universally accepted High Def spec here in the USA. As a matter of fact, the best spec out there 1080p is not even in use yet. So I went with Enhanced Defination format over HD.

Second, LCD versus plasma versus rear projection is a matter of personal taste. 911 vs. 914 vs. 928 kind of deal. FWIW, I went for plasma.

tabs- Two months ago we purchased a 50" Samsung dlp from Costco. I am VERY happy with it!

And, as Moses says, TiVo is really an absolute MUST! We recently upgraded to an HD TiVo, and I can't imagine TV without it. It's "that" good!

My .02,

I prefer Sony. You can get an excellent WEGA tube-style set under $2500. Sony is the only manufacturer that makes its own picture tubes in house and owns several patents.

I think to get a real quality high def set; plasma is the rule. Be carefull as there is a wide range of DPI/resolution. $3500 would probably buy a nice 30"unit.

I've only had mine for 3 months and now you'd have to pry it out of my cold-dead hands...

I think you'd be foolish not to buy a 16:9 HD compatible set - especially if you only buy a TV every 15 years... HD is awesome, especially if you like sports, and you can get it OTA (over the air) for free with a cheap antenna. Tivo is great, too, but HD tivo is just emerging and I'd wait on that for a while, just get regular tivo, it's not that expensive.

As for direct view vs. plasma vs. projection etc. that depends a lot on how much room you have, how it will be used, etc....
I have a direct view 34" flat screen Panasonic w/HD and tivo. I went with that because it's not too big and looks great from all angles. Good luck...

I've heard and read a few people say to go for LCD over plasma. Plasma's are more prone to burning out. Just hearsay. I'd look in to it.

Tabs:
I'm kind of like you as far as TVs are concerned. I think I bought the one I have in '86 (25 in. Toshiba). Since I don't know anything about comparing them, and since I'm a big fan or Consumer Reports, I would read their writeup on television sets. They did one about two months ago. Very informative, but I didn't pay much attention since my old one is still perking along.

I've heard this as well. Also, I was told by EVERY "sales person" that plasma screens are not fixable. If they burn out, through the tv away.

The problem (for me) with SD/regular TiVo is you loose all HD capability while using it - thus taking your expensive HD tv to mere SD quality. Probably 80% of my viewing is broadcast in HD. Despite the cost, for me, HD TiVo is a must and a purchase I haven't regretted once.

Go with the Toshiba 62"

I bought a Toshiba 61" HDTV last year for about 3k including service plan and delivery and I am still amazed with the picture and sound. The only problem was in moving to our new house, it weighs over 300lbs. I use it with digital cable, Xbox, 2 DVD players, camcorder. It even has a digital camera card input for creating slide shows with your pictures. With the big picture I wanted even bigger sound so I incorporated a "seperates" system consisting of a 7.1 preamp and four two channel amps and two single channel amps(200+- wattsx7) to push the four towers, two book shelfs, center and two subs.
