I've HAD IT!

I have a wife of nearly 3 decades who is still with me. House, cars, all paid for. I pay nobody or no financial instution interest. To the contrary, people and government pay me interest, the best contract paying 9% APR. I love my wife, my home. I have only 3 cars, one of which may be considered desireable. My only child, adopted, now lives 1/2 of the continent away. Thanks to the education and values she got through her parents, mostly her mom, she is perfectly able of taking care of herself, and is quite happily wearing out, sexually, probably mentally, her 2nd hubby, a USAF Sgt. who isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. ...
So tell me, at an age approaching 62...WHY am I generally pissed off about "stuff"?
My thought? Because it's for damned sure that I don't look good naked anymore...:)

dtw 03-28-2005 06:57 PM

So this is what I have to look forward to when I'm twice the age I am now. Great. Stuff ALREADY pisses me off all the time...

I'm headed out to the garage to fire up the car and take some NoDoz...g'night...

Dantilla 03-28-2005 07:08 PM

You don't drive the Porsche often enough.

Joeaksa 03-28-2005 07:09 PM

The difference is that when we all get older, we have a bit more patience and the "stuff" that pisses us off simmers a bit longer, as opposed to taking a hand grenade or some C4 and blowing it to bits as we would (or already have) when younger.

"Stuff" does perturb me but not as much as when I was in my 30's or 40's and I just laugh at most of it, especially when I do something silly...

JoeA

PS having a 32 year old girlfriend who does wear me out sexually helps. :)

bryanthompson 03-28-2005 07:10 PM

You've been hanging around too many angry liberals, and their irrational hate for everything is rubbing off on you.

Shuie 03-28-2005 07:33 PM

Paul, I'll be 28 in July. I owe a lot of people money right now. I'm still paying more in interest on my mortage than I am the premium. Ive been married for a little over a year and I spend Sunday-Thursday every week away from my family on the road with my work.

One of these days I hope to have worked hard enough in this life to owe no one any interest, to own some cool cars, to still have a loving wife, and to have a grown child that is capable of taking care of himself. If I ever pull this off, Im pretty sure I will have earned the right to pissed off at whatever I want. Until then, I have no excuse. Its just the way I am :)

pwd72s 03-28-2005 07:46 PM

Thanks guys, for accepting and understanding my rant...Jeeze, I HATE being an old fart...until I consider the alternative. Sherman? FWIW, which probably isn't much, your 28 age life sounds a whole lot like mine was at 28. A 32 year old mistress sounds intriguing...until I realize that's younger than my daughter. Sex with someone my daughter's age? ARRRGH! I mean, what do you talk about afterwards? "Where were you when Kennedy was shot???" "What do you think of the Abby Road Album?"

CamB 03-28-2005 07:47 PM

I just turned 30, and stuff has been pissing me off for years. Don't get me started again on health insurance companies.

The green tea I was drinking came out through my nose because this cracked me up so much. Thanks for the laugh, I needed it.

ronin 03-28-2005 08:27 PM

and to think I was doing just fine, thank you, until I started reading this damned thread...

now I'm really pissed!

thanks a lot!!

the nerve...

bryanthompson 03-28-2005 09:03 PM

I wanna be like you, Brian. Damn, that's actually exactly where I want to be in 15 years (i'm 20 now) :)

LeeH 03-28-2005 09:27 PM

I think that we live in a generally pissed off society. Anger and discontent are highly contagious.

Personally, I find I'm a lot happier if I avoid TV news - local, national, CNN etc. I have a few internet sources for the headlines to stay informed, but the in depth analysis of everything that's wrong with the planet is emotionally draining. Ignorance is bliss, right?

That list of everything that's right in your life... write it down and read that list at the beginning of each day. The little "stuff" will seem more trivial. As Cheryl Crow sings in one of my favorite songs... "It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you got."

My dad spent much of his life a very angry man. After my mom died he figured out that his daily mood was a conscious choice. At 65 he chose happiness instead of anger. He chose to be happy for the final 13 years of life. I only wish my mom had been around to see it.

BRPORSCHE 03-28-2005 09:28 PM

young and innocent

Man i really don't want to grow up after hearing all this great news that i will encounter one day. GREAT! thank god i am only 17....got a looooooong way to go!
p.s - sorry you old geezers

dd74 03-28-2005 09:36 PM

In New York, the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus) has killed off the black or "ship" rat (Rattus rattus) and the roof or Alexandrian rat (Rattus rattus alexandrinus) by systematic attacks and sheer population growth. Usually they kill by biting the throat, or clawing their victims to death. Then, if hungry, they eat what they've just killed.

So, at least you're not a ship or roof rat; that would definitely be something to be pissed about. SmileWavy

Rufblackbird 03-28-2005 11:31 PM

I don't think it's an age thing...because right now, at 24, I am generally pissed about everything...well just about everything going on at home. :o

12own911 03-28-2005 11:32 PM

Poor guys... must be rough. :D

oldE 03-29-2005 04:41 AM

LeeH said it well. We all have things happening around us. You can't control most of it. What you can control is your reaction to it.
I admit, I'm one who still 'gets exercised' over some pretty stupid stuff from time to time, but through a half-century, I'm learning on what not to waste energy on.
pwd72s: Do you have your health, do your loved ones know how you feel about them? Enjoy what you have in life, but don't forget to set some goals. Things could be far worse. (Hopefully that sounded deeper than "Take a pill") ;)

I think that it's a realization that the world is a pretty F'ed up place and that there is NOTHING you can do to change it. On the good side, once I reached 50 I realized it was OK to say "Oh you don't like that?? Well piss off!" I have been trying lately to just see the stupid humor of it all. Kinda like the morons outside Schiavo's hospice trying to sneak in with a bottle of water. Now where were you going to put that?? Classic moron behavior.

LeRoux Strydom 03-29-2005 05:38 AM

There's an old, probably apocryphal prayer that goes something like this - Grant me the strength to change those things that I can control, the patience (virtue) to accept those things that I cannot change, and the wisdom to understand the difference between the two.

Submit to your deity of choice.

I guess with age comes wisdom, and I agree that LeeH summed it up best. I am at the ripe old age of 44, and I still do not fully understand the difference referred to in the prayer. So yeah, I still get pissed at things beyond my control, but mostly I choose not to. Now, the 32-yr old mistress.... that makes me pissed! :D

Brian,

I have the money and the power and not going to use it to get a woman. Any woman who meets me will have no idea of what I am worth, nor what I do for a living. Do not need a woman who works like that...

Paul, some of the 32 year old ladies are pretty well rounded. Some are still babies. Finding the right one is the hard part!

It's called the Serinity Prayer:

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot
change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

My mom had embroidered the Serinity Prayer and framed it. When I was growing up, if things weren't going my way I was required to go read it.

The "wisdom to know the difference" part seems to come later in life! ;)

Dig Hole, Insert Head

Paul,

Turn off the evening news and you'll feel much better.

I used to watch our "5pm-piss-and-moan-the-world-is-ending" news broadcast every evening and I'd invariably be pissed off the rest of the night.

Now, from 5-6pm I roughhouse with my 3 and 5 year old boys.

No more pissed off Daddy. Bruised and beaten, but not pissed.

juanbenae 03-29-2005 06:50 AM

paul, i sensed you were a grumpy old fart all along, and admired you in spite of it. keep up the good work you crusty ol bastard!

Then you need to drive slower when passing that nude beach. ;)

I know I don't look good naked at 48, but hey I never did.

gaijindabe 03-29-2005 07:12 AM

Dad goes in the woods with a chain saw, culling trees and cutting firewood - he comes out much happier..

Brother in law (retired cop) was hitting his late 40s and getting cranky - went out and got a sport bike and is much, much happier..

But then I wouldn't be able to check out the well muscled 19 year olds. And you know what us older ladies say about 19 year olds: "They never get tired!"

Ahhhh...back then? I was 6'3" (well I'm still there anyway), 180 pounds, competitive swimmer's bod. Think I'll drive about 35 miles North of here today, rent a 9' Brunswick gold crown for a few hours. That usually lifts my mood...even on the days Cindy gives me a lesson in cue use...:)

That part was just a joke. I don't really believe that Tony Montana held the keys to happiness.

I was engaged to my wife when we were still students (she had just turned 19!), without a penny to our names. When we were first married, I recall having $1000 in the bank at one point - barely more then one month's rent.

She was only 20 when we got married, I was 24 - just a couple of kids in love!

naaah. at 20 I would have been a showoff, at 40 I'm considered damned lucky!

Better bring them joggin' shoes to the XXX on the 9th. I'll bring the stop watch...and the beer.

Gawd...I think my best mile EVER was in the 7's...and I'm 26. I was never much of a sprinter, but I do regularly run 7 or more miles in a stretch. I think I've sacrificed speed for strength...and unfortunately strength brings muscle mass...which makes you slower.

turbo6bar 03-29-2005 08:16 AM

Find a way to separate daily crap from reality: exercise, charity work, build a water garden and listen to the water trickle, lay on a beach. Anything!

dhoward 03-29-2005 08:24 AM

Glenlivet 18 + 2 ice cubes.

pwd72s 03-29-2005 08:25 AM

Everybody remembers Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile. The guy who finished just behind him? Dyrell Burleson. Now several years retired as director of the Linn County Parks Dept. The local paper did a feature article on him several years ago...he still running, but admitting the old joints at 60 + aren't quite as limber as they once were. He told a tale of running his usual route, a mile or so in, thought he was making good time. Footsteps came up behind him, a cute aerobics instructor girl he knew, she in her mid 20's...he picked up the pace, stayed with her for a spell. Then sense overrode ego. He dropped back to his usual pace, admitting to admiring the view as she pulled away from him. :)
Father time, he eventually defeats all athletes....

Superman 03-29-2005 08:40 AM

Bryan, your posts have always had a particular "tone" that I now must say is in interesting tone for someone who complains about the anger and hatred of liberals. Very interesting tone, for someone who's saying that. Just something to consider. And it might not be reachable for you, but at some point you might consider what stereotypes mean to you, and how reliable you really find them to be. As a clue, here is one of my favorite sayings:

"All generalizations are false."

Get it?

Paul, I understand. Getting old ain't for sissies, is it? Sounds like you need to buy a sportscar. Like a Porsche. Oh, wait a minute.....you already did that. I guess you're screwed, Paul.

I don't get pissed off...I just piss other people off....

Paul is what I call a Mother Pleaser...everything to make Mother Happy...like always being polite and being the perfect little gentlman....instead of just being himself....I guess if I were always trying to please Mother that would make me cranky too...
