A great beginning!

Yesterday I spent 1.5 hours with my arm up to the shoulder in the fireplace flue trying to fish a goddamn dove out of our chimney.

In the process of figuring out how to do this I grabbed a branch from one of our palm trees (an unopened seed pod frond to use as a "fishing rod") and as I did so a baby dove came catapulting out of the tree into our pool...quickly scooped him out and watched the sodden thing sail parabolically onto the ground. Now he's dead. Probably would've gotten caught in the chimney, anyway.

Finally grabbed the chimney resident (my wife was sitting on top of the chimney with a flashlight, giving me pointers/directions/encouragement), walked outside, and HURLED that mofo into the air. He got up at least 40 feet before he spread his wings and started flying.

I'm not a very good vegetarian, am I?

That was great Aaron! This morning I noticed a bird building a nest at my front door/porch. I'll try to get a pic.

I had rats in the walls out in the garage. Saw one scamper into a hole near the breaker box by leaping from a shelf!

This means war.

Bought one of these babies at Lowes for about $5:

Quite a clever design. The bait comes in from the bottom, so your fingers never have to get close to the jagged jaws. It cocks and locks with one hand. The trip plate is flat and wide.

The first casuality occured within three hours of installation. Over the next week, I got three more adult rats, and a pair of juviniles (twofer!) Works very very well.

Dude I had rats in my attic last year. They are persistant critters. I learned a lot. They only need 1/2" hole to get in someplace. They also are very territorial, and come back year after year to the home breeding place. I finally got them out of the attic and had to have all the insulation sucked out up there ( you think YOUR job sucks) and reblown in. We sealed up everything and replaced all the soffiting around the house to make it final. In the last few weeks I have been hearing them chewing on the house to get back in. If they can't they will have to move and if they go to another rats territory the will be killed by them. They are desparate to get bck in my attic so I have been on "rat watch" lately looking for the place they are nawing on to get back in.

Ahh..the benefits of an all brick house!! (except for the roof, of course...)

Had a momma squirrel years back in an eastern house that chewed her way into the porch soffit. That was fun trying to get rid of her. Finally had to use a pistol. She was starting to get very territorial and I had small kids at the time...

Robert Coats - "books about lawnmowers"????????????????
As a man with 3 garden tractors, 3 walk behinds, gas trimmers, chain saws, generators and on and on......
That sounds like a great thread of its own. Getting info on Pcars is easy compared to getting good info on small engine work.
Please give details about these books.

I work for Honda Power Equipment (Honda mowers, generators, string trimmers, snowblowers, tillers, etc.) and my .sig is a bit out of date. Moved from publications (shop manuals, service bulletins) to product planning/marketing almost three years ago.

Anyway, I have lots of tech stuff and resources on *Honda* engines, power products, and outboards. Fire away with your Honda small-gas engine/product questions.

I found this recently, seems to be a fairly good forum with decent traffic:

I have had rats and mice invade the house periodically over the years. I can sympathyze with your plight; it really sucks to have to deal with them. Professional exterminators do a pretty darn thorough job. Get one out once and take note of their methods so you can use them when the rats come back. It seems once you have them they do keep coming back. In my case there was an 8 acre wooded lot next door that harbored them, so no matter what I did they eventually came back. Good luck, and don't fool around with this.

Jefff I have a pro on staff! They come out any time I hear the little bastards up there. He was out today to check the traps and said they were not trying to get in they were trying to get out as he had entombed them last week. Serves those little buggers right. In the mean time I go to bed at night listening to them chewing to get out...makes me feel like Edgar Allen Poe!

M.D. Holloway 04-05-2005 08:17 PM

Man! You got a set for sure. The part were you peek into the bag is the stuff of nightmares - where the little demon comes flying out and tears into your eyeballs and starts to eat your brains!

Come clean, when that lil bastid went scampering out of the bag, did ya squell like a Cathoic School girl?

thastings 04-06-2005 04:10 AM

Allen,
Thanks for the info on the small engine forum. Great site, the Pelican BBS of small engines.
