Talking Bought a House!

This is really something I didn't think would quite this soon. I went down to Lincoln last friday with my parents to look at a few houses, just trying to get an idea what to expect, and I ended up making an offer on one. The offer was accepted the night before last, so I'm working with my mortgage guy on getting everything rolling real quick-like. I wanted to close June 1-ish, but the only way I could get them to accept was if i moved that up a month. So, as of May 2, I'm a homeowner!

The house is a nice little 2-bedroom with an attached, totally finished, 2-car garage. The bathroom is huge and has a skylight and a shower you could fit probably 9 people in. It's totally ridiculous. The house was originally built in 1992 for a guy that used a wheelchair, so it's pretty open and the doors are pretty wide, which I like.

Anywho... here are a couple of pictures.

I don't think I'll move in until June or July, but I need to start collecting furniture and things. I don't have any big plans for it yet, just to make it look good and be comfortable. Right now everything is really boring... white walls, old people furniture... boring.

Originally I was looking at some houses from 1910 and 1920. The ones that I liked were 4 bedrooms, 2 floors, plus basements, and had wood floors everywhere. In one of the older houses, there was even a pit in the garage. I liked 'em both, but i'm not sure I could've kept up with maintenence.

Anywho... Any pelicans that find themselves in Nebraska are welcome to stop by

Congrats Bryan

Budget for lawn tools, trash cans, hedge trimmers and all that stuff, it add up quick. BTW, how many sq. ft., how much property, rural or urban, how much did you pay. A 1,500 sq. ft. 40 year old tract house in Los Angeles in a suburb with a 5,000 sq. foot lot goes for about $400k. Put money away for maintenance, water heaters, roofs, etc. All houses can be money pits.

I would think that in Lincoln NE the prices are more sane. Major kudos on the house Bryan!! I'll echo the previous posters, smoke the "old people" furniture. Contratulations!

Best investment you could make! Just found out that my house here in Phoenix has gone up over $200k in 3 years and its still rising. Buy land, they are not making any more of it!

Thanks, guys. I'm pretty excited, nervous, all of that good stuff. Putting together a list of things to buy before I get up there. Lawnmower, all of that stuff's on the list.

The furniture is definitely going away. Dunno what I'm going to replace it with yet, though.

The house is 1136 sq ft., on a 7100 sq ft. lot. and I got it for $105k. The neighborhood is nice, I think there are 7 houses in the little area. The other houses looked like they were well taken care of, and they seemed to be older, which I was happy for. The last thing I want is to be living around a bunch of damn loud college kids (yeah, i'm only 20, but I prefer to be around older people)

As far as house prices... Out on the nebraska countryside, where I am now, you can find 2500-3000 sq ft houses for $175k. The house I'm getting is in Lincoln, about 5 blocks from the UNL east campus and maybe 10 blocks from Wesleyan, where my girlfriend will be attending. It's kindof in a residential area that's just off of one of the main shopping areas, in its own little world. It's pretty low traffic, since the road it's on sortof dead-ends because of the bike path.

Congrats Bryan!
As for $105k for a 1200 s.f. house....I think I'm going to start weeping.

Way to go, Bryan!

Just be prepared to say "adios" to your disposable income! But it's worth every cent of it.

Contgrats to Bryan!!! I wish I wouldn't have wasted my 20's renting!

This one just went up for sale around the corner from us. The house is 1450 sq feet, corner lot - but tiny at 4500sq feet priced at $588K with a fairly busy street on one side.

We bought our house a little farther up the hill for $465k four years ago (or was that five? I guess I am getting old) and with 2800 sq ft would probably sell today for $700k - $750k (or $1.1M using the square footage price above ).

Still waiting for that bubble to burst.........

Bryan,

Congratulations! Welcome to the "homeowner life"! Owning your own home sure feels good and if you're a hands-on DIY kind of guy (which you are or you wouldn't be on this forum), you'll enjoy fixing things and saving $. $105k in Southeast MI wouldn't buy you very much, looks like you got a very good deal, enjoy!
