Cat Hunting in Wisconsin

Did anyone else catch the story about the possibility of legalized cat hunting? We're not talking cougars, lynx, bobcat, or anything like that. We're talking feral cats. There is apparently overwhelming public support to re-classify them as "un-classified wildlife", which means open season all year with no limits. Any kitty without a collar or outside the "immediate control" of its owner could be legally shot if this passes. Are they that big of a problem in Wisconsin? How do we get this passed in Washington?

Here is going to be another post that's gonna suprize some folks who stereotype liberals (Mark, you'd better sit down. John, Bryan, you should always be sitting down). When we had the nationally-famous bunny over-population problem in the Idaho Falls area around 1982 (we're talking a SEA of rabbits everywhere), we would use them for target practice. (if you recall, thousands were killed by herding, and clubbing). I liked to use the .30-06 with the 110 gr "Kirksite" bullet. That lightweight full-brass semi-blunt bullet had an almost unbelievable muzzle velocity. The result of this velocity was that the bunny/target would be vaporized. It was like they were made of powder. Poof!

Okay, now back to your regularly scheduled political stereotyping and mudslinging.

You get get spotted owl soup in my hometown, a logging community in North Idaho. It's tasty enough but chicken and beef are better.

IF i were to hunt rabbits,....er..cats. my weapon of choice would be a 22-250. for the long range stuff. close up work? shotgun.

still the best option is to trap and spay/neuter and then release them.

You know, it seems like it'd be an interesting challenge to bow-hunt kitties. Crossbow would be too easy, but a standard compound bow would make it pretty tough. They're so close to the ground, and they have great reflexes ... boy, that'd be awesome.

From what I understand, it is a very real problem. Farmers have near infestation on farms, in barns etc. It has gotten beyond the point of controlling them or rounding 'em up.
I did see the other day on the web somebody shooting prarie dogs with one of those .50 cal rifles; they just vanished.

Sup...I'm well aware of your enjoyment in slinging a little lead now and again. Afterall, you grew up in N. Idaho and live in Tenino...

I'm thinking a wrist rocket with some heavy fishing weights would be pretty fun too.

Yep, for challenging fun, a .22-250 or .222 is the weapon of choice. Those things can reach out fairly accurately to 400 yards or so. Need a steady hand. Maybe 500 or 600 yards. Some folks will report shooting things at mile-long distances, but most of us know how to evaluate those reports, if you know what I mean.

If local farms are at risk, farmers might be happy to supply the boxes of cartridges. Couple of six-packs and some sandwiches.....

Holy..... The good ole Wrist Rocket...that's what I used to use as a kid. It is challenging. Instead of fishing weights I used ball bearings.

Hey Jeff...what do you think a round from my Trapdoor would do to a kitty cat?

Maybe the Enfield .303 would be better....

Actually, I could tell you from first-hand experience. A big old 500 grain round nose in front of 70 grains of FFg from the .45-70 is pretty hard on kitties. My .220 Swift, a custom Ruger #1 with a 28" Lilja barrel, launches 60 grain Hornady V-Max's at just under 3900 fps. In a side-by-side comparison, it was even harder on kitties. For more suburban environments, the .45-70 with that 500g round nose cast from pure, dead-soft lead, and driven to about 300 fps with 4 grains of Unique, is absolutely silent. Sounds slow, but it's kind of hard on kitties, too. It helps to have a buddy east of the mountains with a cat problem in his barn...

I'm thinking AR-15, Ruger mini-14, something in that realm. Being predators, I would think that a feral cat would be less timid than the typical varmint allowing some nice closer range semi-automatic fun.

I'm betting that my new .357 wheel gun would prove challenging....especially if I miss the first shot.

Feral cats are a problem where we live as well, They carry disease, fight over territory, and are mean. They will fight with our pet cats. At one time we had three mother cats, and 3 litters of feral kittens living near our house, as well as other adult feral cats. We now have only a couple of them around. We have two pet cats, and we love them very much, we had feral cats trying to fight with them and drive them away, so we did what we had to do. They can rapidly reproduce, and need to be shot.

You can use the 22 for that if your aim is good enough.

There is a simple, food chain type solution to the cat problem. Start breeding thousands and thousands of viscious pitbulls. They love cats!!!!

.....oh yeah, then what do we do about all the dogs.....

.....I got it, we will release....tigers, yeah tigers.....

......hmmmmm, what kills tigers......
