Racing Rednecks
Me and the Boy - in the Targa top off, going to my buddies house on Sunday to help install a new hot water heater. At the light, a 80's mustang pulls up along side to our right. They start reving. We look over and smile and I reving.
Max bursts into laughter "lets race Dad!" The two rednecks in the pony are looking at us smiling. "Nice car Bud!" The driver says. "Thanks, she needs some work but she does alright" I say. Max sticks his up where the top should be, "We can beat you!" he yells. "Max, easy buddy" I say. "How fast is it?" the passenger asks. "The thingy says 160!" Max shouts. "I don't think she has ever seen close to that" I say. The passenger, dip cup in one hand screams in only a true Texan can "GIT ER DONE!" At that I started laughing my arse off - it was true Texas speak. The light turns, I chrip the wheels but hold her back. The rednecks are having a great time as they drove by us. My boy looks up at me and says "Dad! Why don't you git em? Lest beat'um!" "Max, do you think we can beat them?" Disappointed, "Ya! Easy!" "Then the win isn't worth it - too easy. Lets race somebody worthy of our time someday.' "Ya, someday we'll have numbers on the side and everything!" and a few upgrades, but thats another thread...

That is a great story, and I'm sure a "special moment" for you and your boy.

Great story, Mike. I look forward to those moments with my son.
Should make it into a Visa card commercial! Last line of the commercial: Your son thinking your the coolest Dad in the world? Priceless.

The other thing I forgot to mention, when we finally got back home, the little guy looks up at me and says "Dad, should we get a whale tail or a duck tail?"
I started to laugh "You been hanging out with Ed Hughes & Mark Wilson way too much boy!"

When my youngest son was 9 and I bought my new Road King, he absolutely loved to ride on the back. Like any young gear-head, he always wanted to know how fast it would go. One day I had him out on the freeway and kind of goosed it for awhile. On the off ramp all he could say was "daddy, did we do a hundred?". The reply, of course, was "sure little buddy, we just hit a hundred". It was really more like 70, but he didn't have to know. When we got home he jumped off the back, and running up the driveway, he started yelling at his mom "mommy, we just did A HUNDRED!!!". Boy did I have some explaining to do. Now that he's 14, he shows a little more restraint when we return home from a drive in the 911... Kids are great, aren't they.

My son has been along for some wild rides. I have only raced one time with him in my car and felt pretty crappy for letting myself get suckered into the race afterwards... but I must admit I hope I am not turning him into a menace on the road when he gets his license.
"Don't do what daddy does son its dangerous and bad" My son turns 12 soon so realistically he will be driving in 3 years. I already have him in a Jr. Kart in the SCCA and plan on having him attend the Evolution Driving School teen driving program. Now the trick is to convince him that he has to drive responsibly on the street. Funny story none the less....GIT ER DONE!!

Jeff Higgins: Thats funny stuff! Max is all about what gear we are in. "We in 4 yet Dad?" "No buddy, we really have to going about 70+ for her not to get mad at us".
Getting to Third is a treat for him with the top off - means we are going at least 50+ and on these Texas roads, it makes for a fun deal. GIT ER DUNN!
