Slippery Slope.
Take Australia's gun ban. Since it took effect, crimes have been committed with swords--now they are discussing a sword ban. This is true, but I haven't seen anything more recent than about 6 months ago--maybe an Aussie member can provide an update? |

didn't take the time to read all the replies here, but I gotta say:
1) Self defense is a right, no doubt. 2) Ted Nugent is a bombastic, super-alpha-male attention-whore who has gotten WAY worse over the years. He knows how to lather up certain crowds, but it's all about attention on Ted and he knows how to get it. He's got a lot in common with Jim Jones, and my heart goes out to his poor, misguided followers. |
If the supporters of the right to keep arms attempt to stand only on their needs for self defense, the right will soon be lost.
It has very little to do with self defense (in the personal sense). Why are people afraid to say the real reasons we have this right? I'm not a nut, heck I don'tr even own a rifle, but I know that someday it is possible our own government may cross that line. Once you give it up, you'll NEVER get it back. You need to think generations into the future. |

Let's get one thing straight..there is no 'reason' to own an assault rifle...unless you are going to go around assaulting things...but that's not to say banning them will make a damn bit of difference...bit like saying you don't need a road legal 911 'cos you ain't going to drive that quickly on the road.
You don't need a AK to defend you home, a good rifle or hand gun will do... Guns of any sort will if pointed at another person at the right range kill people....being shot by an AK doesn't make you any more or less dead than a pistol... That there is a right own them at all is the issue. The constitution says there is a right to bear arms. Whilst it stands that should be respected. If it needs changing that's what democracy is about. A majority vote will do the trick. As for guns in Switzerland, the reality is not quite as painted here. First off military service age is 18, not 21 and you do not serve 2 years. Its an initial 4 month period followed by a refresher course of 2 weeks per year until you are 30. Then down to 1 week per year until 40 and finally 1 week per 2 years until 50. If you are selcted to become a non com then you have to add 8 months to the initial 4 months (4 months non com scholl followed by a 4 month intial course as a non com. Selectees for Officer scholl then add another 8 month cycle (4 months officer school and another 4 months as an Initial course officer.) At all times and rank the duty is on the bearer to keep the weapon in s safe place, with the bolt and the ammo (100 rounds) separate. Preferably under lock and key. Carrying a fully assembled but unloaded weapon is only permitted when on official duty, such as going to the shooting range or to active service. Infringments of the rules are dealt with under the Military Judicial system not Civilian and unsually carry prison terms. In the UK where ownership of firearms was serverly curtailed after a few mass murders. Since then the 'gun crime' in terms of incidents such as these and other gun related deaths have vanished. But gun crime...as in crime involving guns has risen...because there are more and more guns generally in circulation. It would however be very difficult to but together the arguement that the banning of weapons has left the populace undefended because, unlike the US we did not have the same histoical gun owning tradition. |

No amount of logic or hard facts will change a liberal's mind. They base their beliefs on "feelings".
They think conservatives are war mongering. Nice. Like GW really wants to send boys and young women to their early deaths. For oil? Your simplistic view of the world is misguided- let others do the thinking. There will always be those of us born to protect. Those of us who sleep with one eye open, who can smell a rat or a shady deal, who sit in restaurants with their backs to the wall, who keep a vigilant watch over loved ones and will apply deadly force without hesitation to anyone wishing to due harm. Freedom isn't free. It was bought with the blood of our forefathers, and will be bought again with the blood of our children. Be it a tyrannical government, or Islam, I feel better knowing that myself and my neighbors can equip themselves with powerful weapons. It isn't a matter of what is "needed". To say assault weapons should be banned and not handguns is the first step. Then they say .45 is too big. Then they say only 5 rounds per clip, etc. Assault weapons crimes are statistically insignificant. And deaths to children by guns? Please. More pools kill kids by many times. Are the parents to blame? Not always. Sometimes its just your time to go- that's why we call them accidents. Its ok to be liberal- we need different viewpoints in this country. But before you condemn conservatives- be thankful for us. It is our mentality keeping you alive... |

I guess maybe you are upset because you believed the French and the Germans, only to be surprised to find out they were on Saddam's payroll along with the UN.
If you hate GW so much- why stay in America? This appears to be the safest place on the planet right now- isn't that the President's number 1 objective? |
Sorry, I didn't know that being a lemming like bush-war lover was a requirement for living in the US.
