photo id to vote

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=703&e=3&u=/ap/20050422/ap_on_re_us/georgia_voter_id

It's not clear what type photo id is necessary. anyone know?

Some might say a drivers license or ID card from DMV, but neither require citizenship.

So how does this help, really?

Well, people had might as well get used to it. It probably won't be long till you are not able to freely travel more than a mile without having to show your state mandated ID to the appropriate police and security personnel.

Perhaps we just need to move to the old german model of tatooing everyone's official id number on their wrist or perhaps we can give it a 21st century flair like an implanted computer ID chip.

RFID. They're already doing it to kids in Japan.

I got that they were more concerned with fraud than non-citizen/illegals; dogs voting, dead people voting, voting 3-4 time each, that sort of stuff. Story was a bit thin on details.

Turn it around. What is the problem with requiring a picture ID to vote? I can't think of anyone legally entitled to vote who doesn't also have a driver's license or ID card.

Likewise I can't really see a downside to this. If you are entitled to vote and capable of doing it you're surely capable of going to the dmv to get a state ID card. If you look under 30 you need to show ID every time you buy beer- whats wrong with having to prove your identity at election time?

Absolutely nothing.

For their own good and safety of course.

To those that say its necessary I say thats what your voter registration is for. If the state want's to prevent voter fraud they can create systems to look for mulitiple registrations and votes. There is no need to further a creeping police state to protect against fraud that can be prevented via less authoritarian means.

Everyone doesn't have a drivers licence and I don't like the idea of needing manditory state ID in order to enjoy one's constitutional rights.

RFID in people is spooky scary stuff if you ask me...

Now "they" know where you went, how long you were there, etc.. welcome to the future!

Coffee Maker: "Hello Mr. Thom, did you enjoy your trip to Deja Vu Showgirls last night?"

Thom: "Hell yeah, I met a nice girl"

Coffee Maker: "You betcha, I made the coffee extra strong because you were out so late, Casanova!"
