Good find! Cannot live without my Tivo... Just recorded the Formula One practice while I slept today...

Joe, Does one need to "activate" the TIVO service? That's the second $100 rebate. I think someone here mentioned that there's actually a free guide service and one doesn't need to subscribe to the more extensive version. Am I off base here?

40 hours isn't going to satisfy you for long, though.

Which is where a $60 DIY hard drive upgrade comes in.

Joe, did you ever upgrade yours?

Rick,

Yes, you can either pay per month or do a lifetime situation. Not aware of any "free" way to do it but there may be out there somewhere.

Just got a email from my IS/IT head. Her 14 month old Tivo puked its master hard drive and she had not backed it up. Out of warranty and now its dead.

Neil,

No time yet, been busy working. Damm basketball finals and now playoffs and we are snowed. Guy I fly for owns part of the Suns so until the playoffs are over we go to almost every game.

Joe

Thanks for the tip. I have been a luddite so far and have shunned Tivo. This may well force me to commit. Is there a time limit on this and do I have to print anything off or pick it up at special locations?

If you buy a Tivo/DVD unit, like from Toshiba, you get free program listings. You don't have things like season pass, where you can tell it to record all the F1 races for the rest of the year, and you only get three days of program listings, but it has worked well enough for me. You just have to manually tell it which shows to record, but it's better than spending $12 a month.

Comments from Slickdeal forum:

"I just got back from the store and both rebates print out at the register...."

Service is 12.95 a month.
"Wait two months til you get your rebate, then call and threaten to cancel, and they'll offer you the 6.95 rate."

RickM, you rock most mightily! I just stopped by my local Curcuit City and ordered my TiVo. The store was sold out but they let me order one and they still printed out my rebate slips. So when it comes in, I'll be gettin' my TiVo for free (well, less the $10 sales tax)...Woo Hoo!
