Here we go again: Chrysler designates 80% of employee parking for Chrysler cars only

IMO, a pathetic, misguided management decision.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050509/ap_on_fe_st/chrysler_only

"KOKOMO, Ind. - Workers at DaimlerChrysler's Indiana Transmission Plant I and Plant II better allow more time to walk in from the parking lot if they drive Fords or General Motors vehicles.

A new policy that takes effect Monday designates about 80 percent of employee parking spaces for Chrysler vehicles only and forces workers to park much further away if they drive a car or truck made by a competing manufacturer."

Nothing new. Check out any GM or Ford plant and you will find the same.

About 25 years ago Fiat tried applying a Fiats Only policy in the employees and VISITORS carparks. It went a bit wrong when a key supplier was refused parking because he turned up in a Maserati.

I don't see the problem with it, though. When I worked at a radio station, we were encouraged to buy cars from dealers that advertised with us, and we were encouraged to go to stores that spent money with the station. They sortof look down on helping the competition

I have to think back for a moment--but when we built the Toyota Plant in Indiana, I believe the policy took effect upon "substantial completion" of the main project phase.

hmm... a parking lot full of Fiats? I'd call that a BBQ.

Well Chrysler-Dodge-Smart-Mercedes-Mitsubishi-Hyundai-Freightliner-Jeep (did I miss any?) all fall under the D-C umbrella, surely you could find something in that lineup to drive to work, no?

Yeah... that's freaking rediculous.

I think the recent story was about one of the domestic auto makers banning cars other than theirs when Reservist soldiers did their weekend duty.

Sure, I'm all for private property's owner's rights, but this is focking rediculous.

That's a bit different, someone else using their lot on off-hours.

Sorry, but with the unions bleeding the US automakers dry, the very least they can due is to by the product that makes their living.

I work for Ford and I've driven my 911 to a few plants and have never had a problem. I was a contractor at Chrysler for 2 years and drove a Ford Ranger and had several scratches/incidents and had to park it 1/2 mile from the plant in the designated "competitive vehicles" lot. What a bunch of crap! Made me resolve to never buy a Chrysler...

I deal with the UAW/GM/Delphi plants every day. I have driven my 911 to my onsite office but I park it inside my stockroom. Most of the UAW officials I deal with know I have it and don't give me any guff. I explained to them first off that we have over 400 company vehicles that are GM. I basically told them, in a nice way, that I don't care what they think. What I drive on the weekends doesn't affect the way I do my job.

Yup:

they pay me for a service which is my time and my talent, I buy what I drive, when they buy what I drive we can talk, but for now, i drive what I want to drive.

They aren't telling them what to buy or drive, only what they're allowed to park on company property.

While I can't see where driving a 20 yr old Porsche onto their lots would be such a big deal, I could certainly see where driving an '05 Chrysler into a Ford plant would irk them a bit. I notice both you guys' other cars are the brands you work for/deal with.

I drive what I want as I do not work for an automaker.
Personally, if I owned any type of manufacturing business or
service and one of my employees came to work with a competitors product and blatantly waved it in my face, I would find a way to terminate the Mofo...anyone working for me that would disrespect me would ...well...I can be a major Fucher at times...

So the working class is good enough to fight your wars but not entitled to a decent standard of living and retirement. Unlike the village idiot running the country, which of the Big 3 CEO's decided to lead by example?

I do agree though, they should be supporting themselves and their company.

I haven't spoken to anyone who works for an auto manufacturer. Is there not an employee discount deal in place to encourage people to buy what they help build? Michelin Tire in NS has a program in which they offer employees a discount on the purchase of their tires, but they want the carcasses back for R&D.
When I worked for a dairy, I tried to purchase products which came from our plants, because I knew the people who made those products and the care that went into them.
My experiences with Chrysler vehicles, though, leaves me to believe I would be taking the bus to work.
