Anyone sell a car to CarMax

Looking at getting a new car, and don't want to go through the headache of selling it.

I know that Carmax buys car, but is it a rip off, or do they give you the same that a dealer might?

Thanks

My sister used to work for CarMax and bought a couple of cars from them and has nothing but high praise for CarMax.

I've sold 2. both got me a good bit more than the dealer and less hassle than private party.

My last car, i settled on a price to buy with the dealer and then drove to carmax for a quote, sold it to them and the dealer sent down a porter to pick me up to buy the new car.

the ride with the 'porter' was interesting. I'll never buy a dealer demo car because of it.

Einreb,

Was there any negotation in the price they offer for your car?

No haggling at all. They checked out my car, then game the the price. Take it or leave it.

Nope.

#1 - '99 passat that the dealer offered 14.5 in trade... carmax gave me 16k

#2 A tired '92 maxima dealer offered $800... carmax gave me $1800

the downside is that if the car you're selling is higher dollar... you cant deduct the trade in amount on what you pay taxes on for the new car. (or at least i don't know of a way in illinois)

Bought the X5 from Carmax and traded the wife's car. It was better than the dealer book but a little less than private sale.

After figuring in the reduction in sales tax if they took it against the X5, it was a good deal. It was also a zero hassle deal. Good deal for the X5 (2000 with 42K miles) and a resonable price for the Mits.
