That so, most of them that I know live in VW Buses, have dreadlocks and stink of patchouli oil.... good weed though

BTW, I love Beck, Tori Amos and Bjork. I can understand how the older generation wouldnt get them..

I guess I am ahead of my time. :D Most cannot stand my music surf punk and hardcore: Pennywise, Blood for Blood, Rise Against, Ten Yard Fight.

C'mon - Tori Amos - another "whoa is me" chick. Throwing Muses hit the Amos' target long before Amos knew how to walk, talk and howl (sing?).

Beck's cool...

You and me both. It was amazing when the Dead would come to Vegas to play. You knew a week before hand the dead were coming to town. You could literaly smell it in the air .It was the same with Phish, but not at the extreme as it was when Jerry was still around..,.,.,and yes,,,,, good weed.

Sort of agree, but think Kate Bush did it even before Tanya Donnely and Kristen Hirsch

Sonic Youth is my idea of a rock career. Those guys have stayed together since what, the 50s? :D Kim Gordon has one of those voices that screams wisdom.

Kate Bush is different from Hirsch et al. Bush's music was more of a sort of phantasmic trip with lots of reference points to classic literature - Jane Austin, comes to mind. She's celebrating being a woman, yes, but she's in complete control of the situation. Kirsten Hirsch and the other in "TM" were just raw "...you **** me, I **** you stuff," and affective with their rolling beats. Again, they were in control - saying it like it is.

Tori Amos seems like she's out of control - a Sylvia Plath, if you will, but with her legs open to the piano's keyboard like some sort of victim. It's all so BTDT...

I don't get the Bee Gee's.

I recently saw a show on them on the E Network...sort of a "history off" type of thing. The show was claiming that the Bee Gee's were some huge band in the 60's...comparing them to the Beatles, but more cerebral. How come we never hear their early work on classic rock stations then???

I also don't get Peter Frampton...wtf is with the talking guitar?

Ditto Elton John...and ABBA.

How old, er uh, young are you? Stevie Ray? Beatles? Blasphemous just to mention them in the same thread as Britney, et al.

I don't think it was his guitar. I thought it was something hooked up to his microphone. Anyway, I guess you had to be real stoned to get "Do You Feel Like I Do." It was just long and boring to me. :p

It's called a talk box. They were made by Heil back in the 70's It was a mechanical unit that had a diaphragm and a tube you put in your mouth as you played, you were able to manipulate the sound of the guitar by talking.

I see a trend for what makes some genres popular.

1. Drugs (Phish, Frampton and the dead)
2. Lack of creativity, cookie cutter music (Britney and rap)
3. It is artsy (Tori, Beck and Frampton)

don't flame me...these are my observations and are not necessarily bad things. Anyhow, my music is just a bunch of dudes screaming. In addition you can't even understand them. :)
