Name recording artists you just do not get

Chris Isaak - boring music and I think I can sing better
Britney Spears - this is obvious
Maycie Gray - remember her? Sounds like a two pack-a-day chain smoker and looks like a homeless person to boot

legion 05-24-2005 04:42 AM

Eminen - Didn't you see what happened to Vanilla Ice?
Snoop Doggy Doggy - Why do people buy this crap?
Hillary Duff - (Other than to pedophiles) What's the appeal?
Franz Ferdinand - I like them, I don't get them

Fishcop 05-24-2005 04:49 AM

Farty/Fifty/Fity Cents or what ever the wanker calls himself...

Basically any kind of anti-social "gangsta" rap-drivel... I just don't get! And I'm not that old or cranky

ErVikingo 05-24-2005 05:36 AM

All of the above mentioned "artists" + Moby and heck most of the newer "musicians".

What happened to good old Rock and Roll, where's the new millenium Pink Floyd's, Pete Towshend's, Yes, Crimson, .......?

legion 05-24-2005 05:44 AM

I'm a big fan of Pink Floyd and The Who (not to mention Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton...I even have several Yardbirds albums).

"New" Bands that I listen to:

The Strokes
Modest Mouse
Franz Ferdinand
Ben Folds
Jet
Nine Inch Nails
Tool

vash 05-24-2005 06:13 AM

any american idol.

billwagnon 05-24-2005 06:20 AM

U2. they rise to the level of "okay" occasionally.

legion 05-24-2005 06:26 AM

Don't even get me started on anything 80's. I mean, none of that stuff even made sense then.

911S Targa 05-24-2005 12:21 PM

I just don't get 1 finger down tuned chords in today's ""Rock"" music, or Nu Metal as its called.

Whoa...them's fightin' words... ;)

Anything rap/hip-hop, bubblegum pop or nu metal....oh, and country....can't forget country...or western.

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-24-2005 12:38 PM

Dave Matthews Band - boring
Grateful Dead - REALLY boring
U2 - STFU, Bono, youre a singer, not a politician
REM - same reason, except uglier singer
Macy Grey - proof you dont need talent or looks to make it..
Rolling Stones - they should have been killed after Exile on Main St.
Green Day - "oooh concept album" yeah whatever, they still suck ass
50 Cent - yeah you got it rough, pal... go back to your "crib"
Mariah Carey - what a complete waste of an incredible voice... sad really

New bands i like

Mars Volta
Rilo Kiley
Dresden Dolls
Interpol
Dead 60's
Kasabian

Im just curious why you equate SRV with white trash?

as far as Im concerned, he was one of the most soulful guitarists who ever lived..

Jims5543 05-24-2005 12:43 PM

I like M&M because his lyrics are edgy and his sound is different.

I hate 50 cent, ying yang twins, little john 90% of Rap.

Older Black Eyed Peas is good new stuff I am unsure if I like.

I listened to Howard interview Joe Walsh a couple of weeks ago. He played a couple of songs acoustic and I realized, there really isnt any talent anymore.

Alisha Keys is good, John Legend is different and has a neat sound as far a R&B goes.

I recetly discovered this guy, Israel Kamakawiwo`ole, neat sound really mellow good for relaxing on the back porch with a beer on the weekend.

Amen to the Greatful Dead. What band has all of that heavy-metal stuff on the album covers with the skull and dancing skeletons and then the music is lame enough to bore my grandmother. I suppose you have to be high to understand.

LOL I always used to think the same think. They have these whacked out album covers with like fetuses and danicng skeletons and all this evil ****, then you get songs like Sugar magnolia.. WTF is that about?

legion 05-24-2005 12:54 PM

When the Grateful Dead could pull off a concise song, it was very good. Unfortunately, the best musician and singer in the band, Pigpen, died fairly early on.

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-24-2005 12:59 PM

well it's not just the Dead its also the Deadheads. I mean really, talk about lowest rung on the evolutionary rope, even lower than Republicans

Also,

Bruce Springsteen - just dont get why he's popular. Must be an east coast thing....

dd74 05-24-2005 01:09 PM

Can't stand Bruce - dull, he can't sing, never once has any of his music appealed to me. It's all "BS" to me...

U2 - first three albums were good, then they went limousine liberal. They suck these days, and what you get if you suck is short-listed for the Nobel Peace Prize, such is Bono.

I've been on an Afghan Whigs kick lately. That stuff is outrageous. Greg Dulli's lyrics makes me want to go to confession, then take a shower.

chapstic2001 05-24-2005 01:18 PM

I am with Jims, the majority of rap is terrible, "kno wha I'm sayin'?" Hip-hop on the other hand, very good and intellegent. i.e. the Roots, tribe, Pharcyde, Heiroglyphics etc...

Beck - is it really music?

Tori Amos - I never listened to her until I met my wife...and I know why. Her music makes no sense and has no melody.

Bjork - I guess I do not get "art!"

You would surprised how many "deadheads' live up in the hills of Cali (Southern) who live in million dollar homes, driving over priced Mer Benz, and well paying jobs. I know, its a small percentage, but still.

I guess I am ahead of my time. :D Most cannot stand my music surf punk and hardcore: Pennywise, Blood for Blood, Rise Against, Ten Yard Fight.

dd74 05-24-2005 01:30 PM

C'mon - Tori Amos - another "whoa is me" chick. Throwing Muses hit the Amos' target long before Amos knew how to walk, talk and howl (sing?).

Beck's cool...

Sort of agree, but think Kate Bush did it even before Tanya Donnely and Kristen Hirsch

chapstic2001 05-24-2005 01:39 PM

I tried to get into Sonic Youth in highschool, but just could not do it. there is something there that I just do not like.

BlueSkyJaunte 05-24-2005 01:40 PM

hell yeah, saw them last year at the Viper Room...

not jello, but still good...

dd74 05-24-2005 01:46 PM

Sonic Youth is my idea of a rock career. Those guys have stayed together since what, the 50s? :D Kim Gordon has one of those voices that screams wisdom.

Kate Bush is different from Hirsch et al. Bush's music was more of a sort of phantasmic trip with lots of reference points to classic literature - Jane Austin, comes to mind. She's celebrating being a woman, yes, but she's in complete control of the situation. Kirsten Hirsch and the other in "TM" were just raw "...you **** me, I **** you stuff," and affective with their rolling beats. Again, they were in control - saying it like it is.

Tori Amos seems like she's out of control - a Sylvia Plath, if you will, but with her legs open to the piano's keyboard like some sort of victim. It's all so BTDT...

Drago 05-24-2005 01:50 PM

I don't get the Bee Gee's.

I recently saw a show on them on the E Network...sort of a "history off" type of thing. The show was claiming that the Bee Gee's were some huge band in the 60's...comparing them to the Beatles, but more cerebral. How come we never hear their early work on classic rock stations then???

I also don't get Peter Frampton...wtf is with the talking guitar?

Ditto Elton John...and ABBA.

How old, er uh, young are you? Stevie Ray? Beatles? Blasphemous just to mention them in the same thread as Britney, et al.

I don't think it was his guitar. I thought it was something hooked up to his microphone. Anyway, I guess you had to be real stoned to get "Do You Feel Like I Do." It was just long and boring to me. :p

It's called a talk box. They were made by Heil back in the 70's It was a mechanical unit that had a diaphragm and a tube you put in your mouth as you played, you were able to manipulate the sound of the guitar by talking.

chapstic2001 05-24-2005 01:59 PM

I see a trend for what makes some genres popular.

1. Drugs (Phish, Frampton and the dead)
2. Lack of creativity, cookie cutter music (Britney and rap)
3. It is artsy (Tori, Beck and Frampton)

don't flame me...these are my observations and are not necessarily bad things. Anyhow, my music is just a bunch of dudes screaming. In addition you can't even understand them. :)
