To me, Cash just nailed the essence of Hurt more... although seeing it live is quite amazing. (seen NIN live quite a few times) I gotta agree that Ruiner is probably my favorite NIN song off Downward Spiral as well.. I like Closer though. There's a lot of neat stuff in the way the song is structured... Plus nobody ever seems to notice that the drumbeat is sampled from Iggy Pop's Nightclubbing

Fragile is really good. You have to be in the right mindset to really enjoy it ive found..

Trent's done some cool covers over the years too...

Get Down Make Love by Queen (very cool)

Dead Souls by Joy Division

Physical by Adam Ant

I was just wondering if anyone here is into other industrial music...

Few bands worth checking out in my opinion....

Snake River Conspiracy
VNV Nation
KMFDM
Pop Will Eat Itself (never understood why this band didnt take off)
Meat Beat Manifesto
Psychic TV
Einsturzende Neubauten

What's the matter Jared, do you have something against Ministry and Skinny Puppy? ;)

Jared at Pelican Parts 05-31-2005 03:21 PM

Not at all... Just forgot to list them

911S Targa 05-31-2005 03:32 PM

I still disagree, not arguementatively though, as it is opinion. I just feel the 'essence' of hurt had to do with the somewhat masochistic lifestyle of Trent. Cash's version did strike a nerve though, and definately gave new meaning to song, but it's the original suffering of Trent I can somewhat relate to.

Hard to say which version was 'weirder', Trent's or Queen's. It definately made the purchase of the 'Sin' single worthwhile though :D

Dead Souls, IMO made "The Crow" a watchable movie.

KMFDM is probably my second favorite band, don't forget about MDFMK ;) I love how diverse that band can truly be, from heavy metal to electronic tunes all on the same album.

I've listenned to Pop and MBM, but never really got into those bands. I sort of veered off the industrial tracks, and listenned to some of the odder stuff of the time, They Might Be Giants and a lot of electronica(techno back then, probably had to do with me going to night clubs alot).

Another band you missed was Skinny Puppy.

I listenned to Ministry back when they were more of a dance music band, i.e Halloween. I also liked bands like Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 and the likes..

I once had dinner with Adam Ant. He used to be my sis-in-law's boyfriend before she could no longer take the groupie heat, and anyway ended up getting married to someone more maleable to her "needs." All due respect to his music, the guy was a royal nose-in-air prick! He needed a good Raiders-nation South L.A. beating. Goody two shoes indeed.

Damn, I can't believe I forgot Front 242.

Do any of you guys remember sig sig sputnik?

You heard they threw him in the nut house, right?

He apparently walked into a pub naked brandishing a gun...

there were a couple of other instances as well....

dd74 05-31-2005 04:50 PM

Yeah? That guy WAS mental. But my sis-in-law had a propensity to pick the needful ones. Didn't matter, I knew he wouldn't last longer than three months with us crazy Hollywood jerk offs. :D

Just cheated and looked through my CD collection.

BiGod 20 and Frontline Assembly are a couple others I still have. There was also Kraftwerk.

A non-industrial band I really liked was MC 900Ft Jesus.

It does bear to be said that Trent never considered his band to be industrial. He does say that there are similarities in that industrial music has noise in it, and so does his music, but he always considered his work to be more 'pop'.... I guess if you go back and listen to PHM and compare it to industrial bands at the time, PHM was pretty synth pop sounding.

dd74 05-31-2005 06:44 PM

Anybody heard of Portishead?

lm6y 05-31-2005 07:47 PM

I still have to say that The Downward Spiral is my favorite album. It came out about a month before I found out that my live-in girlfriend was screwing everyone in the county. I was hung up on this girl bad. After the news hit, I was in my own downward spiral. Lots of alcohol abuse, and any chemical I could get into my body. I was a screwed up puppy. I just completely didn't care about anything. I even got to the point that I tried to see how much abuse the human body can takebefore it quits. It turns out that it can handle quite a bit. I existed this way for about 8 months. And thanks to some really good friends, I'm still here. You can really tell a buddy truly loves you when he locks you in his apartment, phisically keeps you there, and stays with you until you dry out. It literally took a weekend to get sober. I don't mean to quit the drugs, but it took a weekend to get it out of my system. To this day, I still call that girl "Ruiner", or she who's name cannot be mentioned. My favorite song has to be The Becoming:

the becoming

i beat my machine it's a part of me it's inside of me
i'm stuck in this dream it's changing me i am becoming
the me that you know had some second thoughts
he's covered with scabs and he is broken and sore
the me that you know doesn't come around much
that part of me isn't here anymore
all pain disappears it's the nature of my circuitry
drowns out all i hear there's no escape from this my new consciousness
that me that you know used to have feelings
but the blood has stopped pumping and he's left to decay
the me that you know is now made up of wires
and even when i'm right with you i'm so far away
i can try to get away but i've strapped myself in
i can try to scratch away the sound in my ears
i can see it killing away all my bad parts
i don't want to listen but it's all too clear

hiding backwards inside of me i feel so unafraid
annie, hold a little tighter i might just slip away

it won't give up it wants me dead
goddamn this noise inside my head

The thing is though, I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. If you have never hit rock bottom, you will never truly enjoy the little pleasures in life, or the big ones for that matter. And also, don't EVER take your friends for granted.

I've never been a huge NIN fan, but my wife is really into it. We've been to two shows, the last tour and his stop in Boston in mid-May and I am impressed with the ferocity with which he plays. Non stop from beginning to end, the way a show should be.

Jared at Pelican Parts 06-01-2005 02:17 PM

Still have my long sleeve NIN self destruct 1995 T-shirt.

Man that was a good show..

REALLY good. I actually like the acoustic version better now..

lendaddy 06-01-2005 02:28 PM

Ok, I'll say it:)

It is my observation that any idiot with guitar skills suddenly becomes a genius if he can clumsily disguise everyday cliches in his lyrics. If he can throw in the occasional sexual/religion twist........well my friends we are amongst mental greatness:)

I realize I'm gonna get flamed, but it's very strange to me. You guys were discussing Rollins and how intelligent he was. If he were say.... a lawyer, you wouldn't even mention the intellect. But since he's a rocker he is praised for being able to form complete sentences and thoughts. Not saying he's not intelligent, just not notably so IMHO.

Another great example is Marilyn Manson, I've listened to the guy on several occasions. He's of normal intelligence, nothing more nothing less. But talk to a fan and the guy's friggen Einstein and Freud rolled into one.

Obviously it's shocking when someone that looks and acts like a doorknob turns out to be semi-intelligent, but that's usually all it is....shock.

Maybe I'm just looking for conflict:)

Jared at Pelican Parts 06-01-2005 02:34 PM

I never said Trent was a genius. I've just really liked his work over the years and really related to a lot of what he says..

I hate Marilyn Manson, Iggy Pop/David Bowie/Alice Cooper did it better

Trent isnt a guitarist, BTW..
