With Teeth
I thought I'd start a thread about the new NIN album, as it seems that there are a few fans (based on the 'Groups I Don't Get' thread.
Anyway, I have a few favorite songs on the album, and some I'm not so fond of. I find myself skipping to my favorites, where as I tend to let other albums like 'The Downward Spiral' and 'Pretty Hate Machine' play all the way through. One thing that particularly intriques me is the sound engineering on 'Right Were It Belongs' (the last song on the album). Here's my take: The beginning of the song, based on the background noise, is sung in a limo on the way to a concert. The sound is muffled and you can clearly hear car noise in the background. The middle section of the song is sung in the bowels of some concert venue. The sound is dry and you can occasionally hear some muffled concert noise. The end of the song is obviously in front of a crowd. The sound opens up (as if it is amplified). You can also clearly hear the crowd noise.

Is NIN the group that wants to "penetrate me"?

I understand David Grohl drums on this album and it shows. Man, can this guy bang the drums. I was into the Foo Fighters early on but, I have cooled a bit over them. But it seems things this guy gets involved in, I like. Queens of the Stone Age for another example. Back to NIN and Trent. I like the album, "With Teeth". I think its clear, he could write hit songs anytime he wanted and knows how to manipulate hooks at a whim. But he doesn't. Doesn't seem important to him and that is something I admire. Another great album, if you get a chance is the sound track to "Natural Born Killers" that he produced. Shows he has some broad interest and its an album I keep coming back to. "With Teeth" might not be his ultimate work to date, but in comparison to much that is out there, it is far superior.

I've never been a huge NIN fan, but the fact that Johnny Cash covered "Hurt" definately lends some credibility to Trent Reznor's songwriting. To this day, I can't decide which version I like better.

LOL. Have you ever heard of a band called Nirvana? I was fortunate enough to see Dave Grohl in Scream, a bit before Nirvana, and was blown away. Then, after Nirvana, the guy decides to show us he can play guitar, and sing, and write songs as well! I hate people with talent! Jim |

Jared,
I'd probably have to agree, but I do remember seeing a live version by NIN when I first got cable TV (6 years ago) that blew me away. How do you compare the two? Both are amazingly powerful, but in different ways. I do think that Social D did a heck of a cover of "Ring of Fire." Jim |

The new album definately has a different 'feel' to it. But then you consider his suicidal urges, heroin overdose, and coping with his drug and alcohol addiction you can expect to see some changes.
The thing that disapoints me the most is that Trent himself feels that his success was based on his addictions, and this album is to test the waters in an attempt to see if he has any artistic abilities, or if it was just the drugs talking. That also has to do with his tours, being all small venues. As he didn't feel people would be interested enough to see him at a big show, luckily he's received 'all the love in the world' from his fans, and will be touring again in the fall at bigger venues with 'Queens of the stone age' opening for him. Personally, I find "The Fragile" as his best work to date. But that also might be due to the fact that I've had more time to allow that album to sink in. That isn't to say that 'With Teeth' won't make that status in my book, I just need to spend some more time with it as a whole, and not just skipping to personal favorites. If you can wear out a track on a CD, I'd almost say that track 1 "All the Love" would be somewhat worn through by now. I just hope some of his thoughts don't come true. Those that have listenned to his music since 1989 have changed right along side of Trent, but somehow he feels that a 'happier' NIN isn't what the world wants, and if he does find himself in a better place in life, that NIN would likely disappear. We've all grown with him, and personally if he feels that NIN needs to relate to a happier persona, I for one would support him in that. I can't quite imagine myself without NIN, it/he's been my favorite band for a good portion of my life, and I haven't personally heard anything that he's done that I've hated...... Allthough 'Closer' came close, mainly due to how mainstream it had become, I preferred NIN to remain somewhat underground so that I can keep it all to myself

That's a tough one to answer. How can one really dismiss the original over a remake so easily. Performed by both artists they still have the same overall meanings, just one is due to neglect of health, and the other was simply masochistic in nature. Perhaps Cash's version wouldn't have been so powerful had he not died of Diabetes neglect?

Are you sure what side you're on? Better not look him too closely in the eye, Are you sure what side of the glass you are on? See the safety of the life you have built, Everything where it belongs Feel the hollowness inside of your heart, And it's all...right where it belongs What if everything around you, Isn't quite as it seems? What if all the world you think you know, Is an elaborate dream? And if you look at your reflection, Is it all you want it to be? What if you could look right through the cracks, Would you find yourself...find yourself afraid to see? What if all the world's inside of your head? Just creations of your own Your devils and your gods all the living and the dead And you're really all alone You can live in this illusion You can choose to believe You keep looking but you can't find the woods, Are you hiding in the trees? What if everything around you, Isn't quite as it seems? What if all the world you used to know, Is an elaborate dream? And if you look at your reflection, Is it all you want it to be? What if you could look right through the cracks, Would you find yourself...find yourself afraid to see?

Maybe it's just my nature, but I've always appreciated the music of NIN much more than the lyrics...it's often taken years for me to "get" some songs.
Take 'Closer'. Listening to the song, it's a passacaglia. A new theme is introduced every two measures (IIRC). The song builds and builds until there is so much going on, it explodes. I risk losing the respect of some NIN fans, but that is the song that first got my interest in the band. I was 15 when the song hit the radio. Yes, initially it was cool because he said the 'f' word. But I bought the album and was intrigued by the music. I still think 'Ruiner' is my favorite song on that album.
