Free Credit Report........
Tomorrow, June 1st, Pelicans in the Southern states — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas — will be able to take advantage of recent legislation which allows each of us to get, on an annual basis, a report from all three major credit reporting companies free of charge.. I encourage all forum members to take advantage of this important legislation.
Pelicans in the Eastern states — Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia — the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and all U.S. territories can order their free reports beginning September 1, 2005. Western and midwestern Pelicans can already avail themselves of this opportunity. Please understand you may get all three reports at once, or you may stagger your report requests throughout the year........ For info or to apply go here........ Link should work now....... http://ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/freereports.htm

Careful...
Some of these "free credit reports" enroll you into an agreement that you have to opt out of within three months. Credit info is too "available" for my taste and these companies have to be reigned in. Just my opinion

www.annualcreditreport.com is the website that I get mine from, some of the other websites give you a free trial then want money from you for continued use of their site.

I did it through 'freecreditreport.com' and found it very useful to have a hardcopy with me when I rented my new place.
And knowing my score helped me negotiate for a better rate when I leased my new car.

I've noticed that the FICO scores consumers get from the bureaus doesn't match the scores lenders pull. Sometimes off significantly. Also, there's auto-specific FICO scores...
One tactic on auto leases is to ask (the fleet manager) upfront "how much over/under invoice (or MSRP)" if you lease it to me at the buy rate? You're better off letting them make a little extra there instead of on the "back end."

Yes, in mortgage lending they use the middle of three or the lower of two. In the car business they usually pull either Experian or Equifax. On leases, the lender will usually use the bureau the dealer pulled, so it's not a bad idea to check yours first to perhaps steer the deal towards the better report. And if you have a report with some bad info/low score on it, make sure the dealer sends it to a lender that doesn't pull that bureau.
Besides late payments and their severity/recency, high balances relative to credit limits hurts a score a lot. I've heard in this regard the highest scores are generated with very low balances, say 5-10% of the limit. Better than zero balances...

OK...I now have 63 pages of account info retrived through the FTC.....
Took about an hour to access and print the 3 reports..... Equifax is pretty good...Experian has some minor errors and Transunion is wack..... Have my address from 5 years ago for starters........ Had to pay for a FICO score (750 )....Equifax is $6.95 and stated they were the only agency which issued them which doesn't seem to be true, Transunion was $5.95....
