went subaru shopping.
well actually, it was my girlfriend. she thinks her 2002 camry is soul-less, and is bored. she is leaning towards the outback limited, or the outback XT. she drives like a granny. and wants a wagon, for dog transport.
i pushed for something more AX friendly, but she said the car is for her. think the turbo is worth the money? maybe only in the mountains. i know there are some subies out there, how are they doing? cliff

Does that WRX come in a sedan version? And can you get the high performace goodies without the hood scoop / tail? What is needed is a good sleeper performance car..

is she thinking new or used? i rode in a new outback this past sunday. very comfortable car, plush interior, lots of room. i like those WRX's that have the hatchback, but i dont think those are offered anymore? are they a model they continue to make available?

The WRX Wagon is still available, although I am not sure how happy she would be moving from a Camry to the WRX. You should look at one of the new Legacy GT Wagons. I am not real fond of all the tacky add-on type stuff on the Outback. The new legacy has a de-tuned version of the 2.5 ltr turbo four that is in the STI.
I have over 20,000 miles on my WRX, mostly highway without any problems (which I would expect from just about any new car). My neighbor has 60,000 on his WRX, without any problems as well. Go to the Subaru website and scheck out the Legacy GT, it might be AX worthy as well.... Bill |

Rumor has it that Subaru will dump the 2.0 turbo in favor of the 2.5 turbo (in various states of tune) in all it's models.

if she doesn't get on it, I'd forget the turbo. My Impreza wagon with the 2.5 na engine is plenty peppy.
The main issue will be interior...how "nice" does she want it? I find my $18K impreza to be fine, but there is no leather, etc. |

I agree Todd, I actually know some folks who have had leather custom added to the interior. My question is why.
At 5,000 the na Impreza had no guts whatsover, and the mileage was not that much worse with the turbo, well unless you drive with the go fast pedal through the floor all the time that is.. |

yeah, but the 2.5 seems to have more grunt down low, and was $5K cheaper. And not having the boost provides less temptation to push the loud pedal so much on the street.
besides, if I want to feel like I'm going fast, I hop on the bike ![]() |

yeah, I wish I had had the low end grunt, but until the boost kicks in, its a littel gutless. Another reason for me is that it seems I-25 (my 50 mile each way interstate) is turning into some sort of superhighway, so the ability to speed up quickly to avoid jack a$$ drivers is nice.
I agree about the bike comment too, with a littel twist of the wrist, all the days frustrations are gone. |

I've got a 05 Legacy GT and love it. Great combo of performance, luxury and price. Only thing it's missing is a 6 speed.
I am still waiting for the Legacy STI it will probably be here in 07 with 400HP and hopefully no giant wing.

Buy them, sell them

I don't work in Subaru circles anymore, but a buddy still is and I recently drove the Legacy 3.0R B-Spec...
Boxer 3.0 six... 250hp (lots of 3.0 torque) STi sourced 6-speed 18" wheels... An amazing car!

Maybe it's just me but recently I drove my brothers bone-stock WRX and came away a little disappointed. I was expecting this big turbo boost to come on and it never seemed to happen. Felt more like an S coming "on-cam" than turbo boost.

Wife has a '98 Forester and loves it. If the girlfriend wants a dog car, the Forester can handle two Great Danes in the back with no problem. You can get Foresters now with the 2.5 turbo. Faster than a WRX!

Legacy GT or Forester XT get my vote! 210HP for the Forester, or 250 for the Legacy. Cliff, now we have to think this through, when you guys are together YOU will probably be driving, and since she's a woman and probably doesn't care all that much about cars, what would YOU have the most fun with? Then, sell her on that! Oh, and if you like her and think you may get married someday, then it won't be just hers. C&D called the Forester XT basically the ultimate sleeper car, I think they tested it 0-60 in less than 6 sec, and great handling for a taller car. Legacy in my opinion is a pretty classy looking sedan, but I've always been a sucker for the Subies.

Drago,
Was a newer model or one of the first few years? In 2004 Suby tinkered with something and the boost comes on significantly gentler. I can feel a definite difference between my neighbors 2002 and my 2004. It also has to do with the way it is driven too.... I have driven the STI as well, it is a night and day difference between the regualr WRX, much to same I would imagine as a 930 vs a 911 ( I have never driven a 930, as I don't want to get divroced when I buy the 930, as I am sure I would feel compelled to after driving it). The great thing about the WRX is the ability to mod it. For $1500.00 I could buy a turbo back exhaust with a cat (with a small exhaust outlet, or even use my stock muffler) and an Accessport and have 271 HP. I have driven a Cobb Stage 2 WRX and man does it scream.... Bill |

Bill,
It's a 2004 model so maybe that's it. So far he's keeping it stock, something he's never been able to do in the past...I have no idea why. Oh, and my foot was to the floor up to redline in 1st thru 3rd.
