How does one define "having" class?

That is, with folks endlessly stating how much materialism they have, do they truly equate wealth with class?

Are good manners, etiquette disregarded? I am all for reaping the benefits of hard work, but dont feel that I have to flaunt it.
I would much rather be remembered as a Gentleman with manners opposed to another prick w/ a Rolex...

I recall debating one person here (not the OT section) and I was very polite. He responded in a polite manner as well, however when someone else challenged him in a not so polite manner, he responded accordingly. I guess one view would be, treat respect with respect....

Anyhow, just being pensive, not trying to stir up the pot...

...er, just dont insult my Llama...

Maybe more of a treatment, taste and consideration. I have known very wealthy people (as we all have) that are horrible - the show zero consideration, no sense of style and are consistantly trying to show off and talk about their material. But, we have known (and still may) know some folks of modest means that show increable consideration and taste.

When it comes to taste, I would say that there are those people who have spent time learning the significance and true value of say a piece of artwork, a poem or even a sofa. Go into their homes and the stuff they have may not be top dollar but the use of themes and textures and actually the historical significance bursts out and you can quickly identify that they have taste.

Class is really more of an approuch towards life and living - of course, their is the arguement that Martha Stewart understood all the above mentions save how to treat people with dignity and consideration.

Its a package deal.

Yes, but more importantly, why? and would it influence your behaviour?

I'll give an example - on a plane last week, the attendent asked if I would like something to drink. I said, "yes please, may I have a diet pepsi please?" She looked at me and froze for a few seconds and said "did you say 'may I'? In my 14 years on the job, noone has ever said that! Your Mother did a good job!". She proceeded to tell the other attendent about me. It was sort awkward. Wouldn't you know it, the next 5 people asked the same way!

I was at a conference on Thursday. There was a reception at night and you could bring your dates/spouses/mistresses - unfortunitly none of mine could attend but I did have several converstaions with other guys and their wives. During the course of the evening, I used a few cuss words, nothing bad (*****, ********* and the like), before I said them I would look over to the lady(ies) and apoligize for what I was about to say then proceed with the story or rant with the word. I could have used another word I guess but sometimes there really is no substitute.

The guys came up to me after and thanked me for showing their ladies class. The felt good that I did this. Someone treated them like they were worthy of consideration.

Now mind you, these were mostly maintenance and production guys from rendering plants - you don't get any nastier! But, treating them like their women are your grandmothers best friends goes far - just makes them feel good.

I thought Class was defined by one's willingness to share his Grey Poupon with a fellow Bentley owner.

A certain Penn english prof wrote an excellent book about it. Very funny, until you run across yourself in it:

Lads, it's not the car or the clothes or the the money that determines class... it is the opulence of the accommodation one requires.
