San Francisco guys: wanna do lunch?

damn there are a lot of Porsches out here, I'm just amazed. Every time I see a 911 or Boxster, I just get this internal giddyness and I want to go say Hi to whomever it is. I even saw a yellow 914 this morning...

anyway, if anyone wants to have lunch with me while I'm in town, that would be very exciting. I'm at the Metreon for WWDC, and staying at a hotel on Mason street.

Bryan,
Enjoy your stay in the Bay Area. Look out for the liberals (I'm one of them ), you just might get a run for your money. Were you in town in time for the Parts Heavan Swap on Sunday? Lots of good Porsche people there, but I regret I couldn't make it this year.

Congrats on the house, BTW.

Jim

I've been pretty surprised so far... everyone's really friendly and all of that, but I expected to see waaaay more rampant liberalism. I did hear that the big gay festival was next week, so maybe they're just laying low until then. My boss is here with me and is a huge lib. We talk about certain issues, but we've come to a pretty good understanding and it just works. It helps that he signs my paychecks, I think

We got into town in Sunday, but got our rooms and pretty much split up, so I haven't been able to see a whole lot outside of the 10 block area we've been wondering around in.

And, thanks I'm still in the moving stages, so hopefully I'm actually living there soon. driving 2 hours to mow my lawn at the house I'm not even living at isn't very cool, but I still have a few weeks before I'll be settled.

I stayed in the Noe Valley recently (suburb of SF). There was a shop in the main st there (24th st, below the Mission) which had a whole lot of stuff you'd feel right at home reading (from memory: "Welcome to the Noe Valley, home of the loony liberals", etc)

Coffee and croissant - Tartine, corner of Guerrero and 18th (I think), if you make it out that way. Anyone else from SF know it? Queues out the door (not something you would ever see anywhere in little old New Zealand).

Oh yeah, especially if you make it down that way, make sure you take your Hipster Bingo with you:

Man, I loved SF.

this is like when the beverly hillbillies pulled into town back in the day. is there one a those cement ponds at your hotel? has the experience made you feel/realize you are more backwards?

there is an ax this saturday in alameda if you still are in town. a thread is going on the AX/race board, if you will be around you might be able to get a ride over from someone heading east from the city or peninsula. alameda is just accross the bay (thats the ocean) from the big lights of the city. but, if you were set on the parade this weekend, well do what you feel in your heart.

BT, remember now, you are in the eye of the storm there in the city, you would get a better idea of the more mainstream bay area folk at the ax. but i am sure the city will reinforce your distain for libs.

enjoy your stay. and if time visit the coast. ocean beach or better yet pacifica or half moon bay.

vash- I'm only here for this week for WWDC, and my new house is in Lincoln, NE I think it would be fun to live in Cali, but I'm not sure I could handle it just yet. I ate squid and rode on my first trolley (right?) last night... that was wild. I'm way too sheltered.

not backwards, but sheltered for sure. I haven't worn my "I heart America" shirt yet, so we'll see how I feel after that. If the loonies won't come to me, I gotta go to them, right? i think of this trip as sort of a missionary sort of deal. I need to help spread truth and morality [/sarcasm]

haha. bryan. i feel the same way. maybe i should move to nebraska, so my vote makes a better difference. welcome to cali. if you want to be "thrown screaming" from your shelter. take your boss to eat dinner at ASIA SF. good food, good drinks, good music and entertainment. and all this served to you by a bunch of good looking cross dressers. walking distance from your hotel. (sorry, what is WWSD?)

Check out
http://www.bottomofthehill.com/ for live music.
Also go to China Town-maybe Sam Wo's restaurant for something unique in style, read link first

Bryan, who are you working for in "stinkin Lincoln"

If you can do it, walk up to Coit tower for the view and walk across the GG bridge.

And there's a great comedy place http://www.cobbscomedy.com/

SF is a place to have fun and see the shows and sights and smells.

I have only heard great things about Tartine, but I haven't had the time to go there myself yet. Rumor has it that they are bakers who like to sleep in, so the freshly baked stuff doesn't appear until later in the day.

I saw these guys while running Bay to Breakers (local SF walk/race) a couple of years ago: is this what you're talking about?

Cool! I'm in Moraga (20 miles east of SF and next to Oakland/Berekly). How long are you staying for? If you ever get a chance to come across the bay, drop me a PM.

steepaa: The company I work for is actually in Madison, WI, I just do it (java/jsp) from home. Until this week, Madison was about the most liberal town I'd been in.

I'm planning on visiting MOMA, but so far the days have been totally packed with apple stuff. My mind is just overwhelmed at this point. Learning lots of stuff, which totally kicks ass, but it's just all at once. This evening we're going out to wonder around town. My boss lived in SF for several years, so he's comfortable and knows of all the cool places. I need to shoot some video to play with for the new QuartzComposer program, so I'll get some of the town. It's crazy... videos on a texture that can be changed/edited/filtered totally on the fly. The new RSS screensaver uses it, and it's flippin' awesome.

jyl: got your txt message, and that sounds good.
