Lost my job today - Damn that sucks!

Got married 2 weeks ago, went on my honeymoon, got back on Friday, 911sc i discover has a snapped torsion bar, fender all the way down, damn i'm pissed at this point that i can't drive my 911, so i rent a car this morning, drive into work, and get fired. it's a gorgeous day.

wtf?

been there for over 5 years, did a great job, the new manager there has had it in for me for the past 1 1/2 year, has been wanting to fire me ever since we met, ****ing incompetant racist a$$ho. He finally convinced them. i'm better off anyway, he did me a good favor, i was miserable working for him. I made a formal complaint to HR in behalf of myself and a few others. a lot of little things he did to me over the past 1 1/2 year, may even go complain to the Mass employment agency and file a formal complaint against him. unfortunatelly, i was a contract employee and can be let go at will. It was just done maliciously after i got back from vacation. dickhead even introduced me to a new hire there even before i was told i'm being released. what's up with that?

Wow, that's just a big load of crap dumped on you all at once (well, not the 'getting married' bit)

I understand being pissed off. You're best off if you put it behind you, and put your energy into finding a new job. Of course getting even is fun too. Reminds me of the time I was laid off on Monday after we had a special Saturday meeting where they told us how great the company was doing. Monday it was, "We can't afford to pay you." I was so pissed. I asked for my last check, and they told me they didn't have enough money. I was even more pissed.

I needed to find a job quick because I was getting married in a few months, and expenses were mounting up. So I stole a customer they had been trying to win from them, and took the work myself. I did the work for 1/2 of what my old company was going to charge, and was still making the most I've ever made. Then I had my fiance, an attorney, write a letter to my old emplyoer asking for my last paycheck. It seems that in California employment is not terminated until your employer pays you your final check. So I was earning money from them while I was already working on the new contract job. The same day they got the letter I got a call from them telling me my check was ready. Now they were pissed. And they didn't even know I had stolen the customer yet.

So nothing wrong with going to the emplyment agency, but for the moment go find a new job. Then worry about payback if you still care enough.

Sucks dude!

Well - I had a job that I was interviewing for the last couple of weeks and it looked very promising. They asked for my references and I called them all to check in with them and tell them what to expect and such. That included my previous manager who is generally a good guy and I knew would give a good reference.

So; they call one of my personals who reports back instantly that it went well and then I don't hear anything for a few days. I call them today and they call back and leave me a message that eludes to a problem with my references. To my knowledge they have only called one of the personals. So I call my old boss and ask him about it and he says "dude, I totally forgot to call them back."

Alright; I haven't actually heard back from the hiring folks to see if that's the reason I didn't get the job but if it is - well, I'll never use him for a reference again.

I design & develop micro-surgical instrumentation, have been in this industry for over 12 years now, own a license of Solidworks, and have performed other jobs for clients in various other fields. This job was my primary source of income, however, so it's gonna suck for a few months until I get my feet back on the ground. Time to do more marketing and read the help-wanted section of the sunday globe.

You'll be fine. Sounds like you weren't in a very good situation anyway. Stay positive!

You might want to try some of the online job sites as well. There may be more jobs online that are not listed in the local paper. Plus you can start looking today instead of waiting until Sunday. Good luck!

Might be time to think about which clients in the other various fields you did work for that you can contact & start networking with them. That may be your best place to start.

Considering the nature of your businsess (contract designer). ...what the hell are you crying about? I mean, its not like you were on the fast-track to be partner somewhere. "Contract designer" doesn't spell gold-watch and retirement beni's .. . so WTF? ...Maybe I just don't like your "race" too. whatever that is.

on-ramp, drop me a line. I think we have some openings in the mass area. One thing that you may like is a position as a reliability 7 lubrication specialist/engineer. If nothing else, you can tell your new bride that you are training to be a LUBEMASTER! (She may tell you you don't need any further training!)

Seriously, drop me a line, I may be able to help you...

It wasn't a "job" you lost .....it was a 'gig." . . .it's the nature of "Contracting." The whole reason businesses hire people on contract, is so they can cut them loose w/o drama.

Thing is, I do contract work as well (own my own seat of SWx, among other stuff, too). But, I don't complain when a project is over. Finishing a project is what it's all about. ANd, the people paying the bill have ZERO obligation to keep you fed with more projects.

No doubt you were getting paid more than any of the "employee designers" . . .and for five years! More money/less security. . .that's the trade-off.

It's like you just made a coast to coast trip, averaging 95mph .... and your complaining that you got one ticket and a flat tire along the way.

The veneer of 'compassionate' over "conservative" is pretty thin, I guess.

I see your point and it's well taken. It's easy to become complacent and take it for granted. Even though it was a contact for 5+ years, it felt more like a job 'cause i was there most of the time working with a good group of talented people. that's what i'll miss the most....

Were you pulling benefits as well? Normally, contractors don't.

Which is probably why they kept you as a "contractor", no? 5 years working for the same outfit is a full time gig, it's not quite like being an independent operator and losing a contract.

That really sucks, but hopefully it'll be an on-ramp to bigger, better things.

Best of luck.
