anyone got an idea for arty, thinking type dates in Los Angeles?

So I've met this new girl and she's very cool, smart, and we've been spending quite a bit of time together, and I was trying to think of intellectually stimulating type dates in los Angeles, or places that are kind of off the beaten track. She's the kind of girl that would want to go hang out at Amoeba, then have a discussion over Indian food...

Anyone have any ideas?

vash 06-09-2005 08:06 AM

man, i miss first dates! the excitement is unequaled.

how about taking her to amoeba and then getting some indian food? hehe. good luck bro.

Jared at Pelican Parts 06-09-2005 08:08 AM

Already did that... She also drives a WRX, so she's kinda into cars a bit.. She thought the idea of going to a DE sounded fun...

nostatic 06-09-2005 08:44 AM

isn't LACMA open late? Or MOMA? How about MOMA and dinner at Little Tokyo?

motion 06-09-2005 09:19 AM

Don't know much about LA, but how about the Getty?

carnutzzz 06-09-2005 09:55 AM

That's an easy one!

Im rather excited about this girl. She's really a beautiful soul, and easily one of the smartest people I've ever met... I really want to see where this can go.. She's also smoking hot, tattooed, free thinking, so thats always good..

Don't think she'd be too interested in the Petersen musuem...

The Kodak theater area in Hollywood is kind of cool. Maybe do a tour of the theater and then go to dinner in that area. They have a lot of nice small restaurants and Ripley's Believe it or not.

SIIHPAPP!

techweenie 06-09-2005 10:34 AM

Hang out at Amoeba and then go for Indian food.

But seriously. Take her to Bergamot Station in SM when there are several openings -- usually a Saturday, then take her over to Swingers on Lincoln. From there, you can stroll the Promenade and maybe drop in to one of the five or six bookstores...

I've only been to LA a few times, but if you post a pic of her it might jog my memory of some cool places I went :D

The 'cool test' for a date is the Museum of Jurassic Technology.

http://mjt.org/

Then you can go to Versailles for comida Cubano.

This thread is useless without pics!

???? First dates are only rivaled in tedium by trips to the DMV and root canals.

John Lyon 06-09-2005 12:47 PM

Go see a good group at the House of Blues. Have dinner at one of those sidewalk cafes on Sunset.

Next time, Greek Theater or Hollywood Bowl.

John Lyon 06-09-2005 12:48 PM

Also, don't forget a Dodger Game. If she doesn't like that, dump her before its too late.

mikester 06-09-2005 02:19 PM

the bar on sunset at the chateau marmonte after lacma or moma (whatever)

nostatic 06-09-2005 02:40 PM

Oh man, talk about romanticising the past! My first date the other night couldn't fit in my fixedbacks. Funny how someone posts body type as "normal" with all kinds of athletic activities but can't fit in a Momo Corse.

It was a short date.

Chavez Ravine...never take intellectual women to places they know better than you. Tell her you got the tickets from a friend, enjoy the weather and the surroundings. Expand her experiences. If she's smart, she'll get it. After the game, then be hip.

mede8er 06-09-2005 04:08 PM

They still have Boxing at the Olympic?????

Can't miss....

Cdnone1 06-09-2005 05:13 PM

Coffee at the Rock House on Mullhuland any Sat or Sunday morning if she drives a WRX.
You certainly won't lack of thing to talk about between the freaky cars, bikes and people who show up driving them.
If that clicks theres only about a million great drives from there. A nice day trip to Santa Barbara is a great drive up the coast, some spirited driving but enough equal time for quiet and conversations.

From the Kingston Trio's "Hungry i" live album: "Actually, L.A. is an intellectual town. We were lucky enough to have run into him the last time we were there."

Jared at Pelican Parts 06-10-2005 11:05 AM

OK, things i know..

She wont like baseball, (actually it bores me too).. Chavez Ravine.. out
She doesnt drink/drugs (big plus in my book).. hate bars anyway

Getty seems cool

Museum of jurassic Tech looks cool

I was kind of thinking of maybe driving down P.C.H. to newport, find some good seafood restaurant.

grudk 06-10-2005 11:24 AM

Zoo. Perfect mixture of intellectual stimulation and classic romance. Tried and true date.

creaturecat 06-10-2005 12:06 PM

drive to San Francisco

scottmandue 06-10-2005 12:13 PM

Huntington library, they have one of the oldest and largest botanical gardens in the world... very romantic for walking and talking. Close to old town Pasadena, lots of cool options for dinner in that area. They have Indian places or if you are into sushi I recommend japon bistro. Pasadena brewing company has great food and decor even if you don't drink the beer (that is really good too)

Or Norton Simon art museum is already right there in Old town Pasadena you could spend the day there and the walk down to all the cool shops and restaurants.

Huntington Beach is very cool if you want more of a beach style.

No, I am not in any way affiliated with the Huntington family!

How about drive up hwy 1 to Malibu? Dinner/lunch at Galdstones?

John Lyon 06-10-2005 02:20 PM

The Huntington Library idea is a winner. Didn't know anything about that, but will soon...with my wife of 25 years.

KNS 06-11-2005 07:24 AM

Ditto on the Huntington, I practically grew up there. My Mom's looong time boyfriend was the Botanical Curator at the Huntinton. You can spend hours there. The gardens are great (the junge garden is a cool place to be on a hot summer day- sitting by the waterfall) but there are also world-class museums on the grounds. There is also a little cafe there for lunch. Not for an evening date but great for an afternoon.
Check out the Japanese garden, many movies shot there.

scottmandue 06-11-2005 09:10 AM

Not to be a nit picker but I think you guys mean MOCA not moma...
Scott here (resident museum geek)

Huntington library has not been a first date place for me... but a first serious date with a gal I really like place, never took a lady there that was not very impressed.
As was said, Japanese garden is awesome, cactus garden is awesome (even if you don't like cactus), pools, water falls, museum (they have a Gutenburg (sp?) bible and the original blue boy) the whole friggin place is just awesome.

yes, we're going to need scorecards.

For starters, avoid the west side of L.A. at all costs. With very few exceptions, the entire west side of L.A. blows. To play it safe, I'd say don't cross Rossmore/Vine. ;)

Take her downtown and have dinner in Chinatown, then walk up Olivera Street and buy her a trinket. Try to keep your mouth shut, let your actions/choices do the talking, I absolutely guarantee this course of action. If she doesn't appreciate you after that, you know what to do.

Oh yeah, concentrate on whether you really like her, not whether she likes you. You have very little to say in that matter. Have fun.

Big Fish (or whatever its called in Malibu (about a mile north on PCH from Pepperdine is a good (cheap) place to eat and talk and then drive PCH.
