new band for me (maybe)

As some of you may know, my last band, Simpleflower broke up in August (our last gig was at the Viper Room in July). Interesting that the marriage went up in smoke not long after...but that's another discussion (the possible connection between the two)...and I digress.

So I've been laying low for awhile, and actually haven't picked up my instruments much until lately. After a few feelers, I auditioned today with this girl:

http://www.iamgifted.co.uk/Janeen_Leah/

The good news: great voice. Songs are ok...we'll see how it goes once things get arranged in the studio. The bad? She's married to the lead guitarist (who so far hasn't impressed me...I think I would mop him up in a cutting session). A band is like a marriage, and having one inside one can be dicey (especially if you want to boot them ;-) ). First full rehearsal with the drummer is Wednesday. More on this breaking story as it develops.

And when it rains, it pours. Next saturday I audition with a 9 piece jazz combo. Could be cool...

Sounds like the 2nd coming (and going?) of Fleetwood Mac

In all honesty Todd, hope it goes well. You'll get one of these things going one day and 10 years down the line we'll see you on VH1 Behind the Music

Todd,

What is the viper room connection?... sounds vaguely familiar. Is it an OJ/Nicole reference? Hey, I need an excuse to cross the 605... please let me know when I can venture north and catch your next endeavour.

oh, no Viper Room connection/suspense. That was just the last gig the band played. If this band pans out we should be playing live soon. I charted 4 tunes in about 10 minutes before the audition and had them pretty cold.

The Fleetwood Mac thing was nuts...one married couple, one sleeping together couple, all disintegrating at the same time while in the studio writing and recording. That's one reason why Rumors was such an amazing album.

As for my connection, I think it has to do with the fact that I was really emotionally invested in the music...I loved writing, playing, and recording those tunes. It was a really deep connection that was making up for things that were missing elsewhere. So when it vaporized, there wasn't much left. And after you have a taste of "what it could be like", its hard to go back...

Right on...hope to be hearing some good vibes from you soon, man.

PS: You gotta stop picking cute lead singers...only causes tension!

She's pretty cute, but Venus (Simpleflower) was beautiful and dripping with talent...very sexy combo. I was/am smitten with her. Unrequited love

Todd,
Not sure I should comment here because you actually have talent, and I'm just a bass player who got by for a decade or so because I had a practice room and a truck, but here goes:

The songs sound a bit simple and obvious to me; I liked the Simpleflower stuff much more. But, as you say, "I think I would mop him up in a cutting session." Maybe that's something to work on.

A small piece of advice about sexy lead singers: Don't do it unless you are no longer in a band with them. I dated the singer from my band years ago (she actually is quite an indie rock hero, so I was smitten and amazed that she wanted to be with me), but it caused nothing but tension with the other bandmates.

Good luck,
Jim

Bell: yes

Jim: I have no interest in this one. The last one?

I'm with you on the critique on the songs. There was a reason I could chart out 4 songs in 10 minutes. I don't think this is a long term gig, but rather something to get back into the game and find my next gig. If the drummer is really good I can still have fun, if nothing else, messing up the guitar player by doing off-time shi*t without telling him. Not that I would ever do that

Sorry about the lame reply, hit the wrong button before.

I was going to put in a plug for off-tempo and unusual tempo music. Don Ellis and Indian Ragas ROCK!

Todd, I've always been envious of folks that could play music. A few years back I thought I could, tried, but found that I truely suck. Well, as an excuse, I started trying rather late in life, long after I gave up my "experimentational" past

Post your gig dates/times and I'd really enjoy coming out. That and we should hook up for a ride, but that belongs in another thread. Good Luck!

Yo Toddie....Just listened to the 3 cuts from Simplflower...competent band...proffessional....but belongs on the NEw Wave radio.....nice light and fluffy.... soft rock...had bits of fire but were immediately fluffed

Geezus U need a good hit of megalomania....

Now listen up...i was sittin watchin the Classic Rock Music station on my TV out of fkin boredom...when it hit me...a thought be boped around my brain..the light bulb turned on...Popular music reflects the times we live in....All that Journey, Jefferson Star***** krap was late 70's.....Mellencamp, Springstein was mid 80's an Regans return of America....the 90's grunge....

Today... in post 911 America....it's repression of freedom of expression.....

Sooo here is .the sound ....compression of the base line....into allmost a montonus hummm....and distortion like Hendrix did..while your guitar line soars...ferociousily

Music is Sound...the sum of the sound that all the various instruments in the esemble make... Phil Spector had his wall of sound..the Who copied it... it in a sense filled your head...it was open and airy..grand broad strokes...The Stones even had theri version of the wall of sound

Jazz is cerebral....mathematical freeform calculation... The Blues are from the gut and basic...

Cream played with the precision of 3 sewing machines with jazz like cerberal sensabilites on a blues platform...it was like taking a hit of coke..it cleans the head out

And jimi hendrix made the guitar into a living breathing thing....with all the emotions and complexities of sentient being..

Music is about emotion..somthing to stir your soul to reach some inner meaning...Toddie U calculate enough...put some soul into it....some fire....light and fluffy ultimately is insipid...like weak coffee it is neither here nor there...
