Who else hates golf but does it because they have to?
Everyone golfs at my office and its the only way to get invited to participate in events away from the office. Personally I think golf is not a sport and the players are not athletes. In fact, calling them athletes is an insult to real athletes where conditioning, aerobic capacity, athleting ability, and strength are factors in competition. Golf is a competitive leisure activity, not a sport.
Anyway, I've taken up this leisure activity and suck thoroughly but will practice until I'm respectable and don't embarrass myself. Anyone feel the same?

How about someone that hates golf, and yet is inexplicably drawn to it like a bug to the zapper? With that said, off to the driving range.........

I have never swung a club in my life. Never will. Ironic since I live within 1/4 mile of one golf course to the west and 1/2 mile from another to the east.
My colleagues use it as an excuse to stand around in obscene 100+ temperatures, get drunk, and drive their carts like idiots (or so I hear).

I love golf and play alot, but no it's not a sport. I forget who said it, but anything that you can do while drinking beer is not a sport

Yeah--golfed in 2 tournaments through work. I am glad that 2 others in here golf regularly, so they can attend the majority of these events. I suck at the golf.
We counter the golf outings through sporting clays. Here in SW PA, this is big, and usually draws just as many or more than the golf outings. I have been on the committee for the United Cerebral Palsy Spoting Clays Classic for the past 11 years--the great thing about the event is that we promote it for anyone--beginners through experts can enjoy a run through the course--which is stunning(The Shooting Academy at Nemacolin). So, I would say that half of the corporate events our company is involved with are golf-related, while the other half is sporting-clay related.

I just played in a tournament on monday at Lakeside Country Club in Toluca Lake. The only time I golf anymore is in tournaments for work, which are usually put on by television shows. I wish there were sporting clays tournaments to go to, but these Hollywood liberals would never hear of it.

I took up golf at age 45 at the request of my son. I am hopelessly and shamelessly addicted. My other addictions are SCUBA and flyfishing, but they require time and planning and travel. I can be on the golf course in 10 minutes. It's outside, beautiful and I spend the afternoon watching deer, geese and red tailed hawks. It's wonderful.

The ultimate goal in golf is to hit the ball as few times as possible. So my question is, why do it at all?

I fall into the 'golf only for work' catagory. Wow, shooting - I don't think I could pull that one off, but I've just about got a carting event put together.

I agree with a lot here... Golf is not a sport, it's a game. I do enjoy playing, somewhat. I haven't played in a couple years, and I usually suck.
When it comes to the range, I'd rather go to the rifle range than the driving range.

Nah. I don't think mountain climbing and skydiving could be sports. I don't see the direct competition there.
I see a sport as something physical, competitive, that has some sort of scoring system. Basketball, football, baseball, soccer, fencing... Things like skydiving, surfing, gymnastics, etc can't be directly 'scored' like the above sports.

Golf has it charms.
I have only played a few times, and made one or two good shots - and was like "ahh, that was nice.." You can see how it is so addictive. If I had the time, and no real hobbies, I might do it more.. But otherwise, life is too short to chase that little while ball. |

The quote was E. Hemingways.

usually the people who complain about golf not being a sport are those that suck at it. I remember an ex girl friend asking me about golf saying it was easy ("the ball doesn't even move") so I offered to take her to the range and show her the basics. Needless to say she never went back.
I used to play a lot and was down in single digit handicap territory for awhile. It actually is a lot like driving at the track. The venue is the same, but the details change from day to day. And there is more than one way to get around the course. |

Golf spellec backwards: Flog.....
I used to golf a lot. And I was good at it. Then I grew up..... Golf is a game in which two balls are involved...One is 1 1/2 inches in diameter, the other 8,000 miles in diameter. The object is to hit the little one without hitting the big one. As George Carlin says, "Watching golf is like watching files f--k."
