I notice the same thing Techweenie, but I'm afraid the general reputatations of the two parties are affected, and not just in the minds of the folks who think Fox is news. There is a general assumption, as expressed here daily, that all things bad = liberal, and all things good = conservative.

In my first year of college I was on the sixth floor of a dormitory, which was an experimental co-ed housing hall. I thought the experiment went very well, by the way. And all five floors below us were womens' halls. The one immediately below us was renowned for its obese and generally ugly inhabitants. One day they got a long piece of butcher paper, made a sign, and hung it out their collective windows for the entire campus to read. It said "MEN ARE NO DAMNED GOOD"

So we got our own length of butcher paper (we were rascals). Our sign, hung above theirs of course, said "WHAT DO VIRGINS KNOW ABOUT MEN?"

Now I say: "WHAT DO REPUBLICANS KNOW ABOUT GUBMINT?"

Note that it completely misses the key point that the deficit W promised to "cut in half" happened entirely on his own watch. Even Kerry didn't bust him on that during the debates, wich I could never figure out.

How prophetic. I wonder if any of the great men being quoted on this thread would even recognize our America of today. Never before in our history have the ideals expressed in such quotes been in such danger. Gubmint and big business have teamed like never before to offload and outsource overseas the very building blocks of our way of life.

My father in law is old enough to have served in WWII. He tells me today that in the years leading up to that war, the U.S. was in much the same kind of frenzy to ship resources and expertise overseas. The goal was the same as today - to build the manufacturing base in foriegn lands as a cheap way to produce products for our home market and increase corporate profits. He claims many people warned that these cheap goods would return to do damage to us here at home. Most didn't think it would be in the form of arms and munitions used against us, but that's how it turned out. He sees the same thing happening today. Not another war in the traditional sense, but an economic war. One that we are losing. Losing because we are not heeding the words of the men being quoted here.

American History Lesson

It was the first day of school in Marietta, Georgia,
and a new student named Suzuki, the son of a Japanese
businessman, entered the fourth grade.

The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some
American history. Who said, 'Give me Liberty, or
give me Death'?" She saw a sea of blank faces, except
for Suzuki, who had his hand up.

"Patrick Henry, 1775," he said.

"Very good! Who said, 'Government of the people, by
the people, or the people, shall not perish from the
earth'?"

Again, no response, except from Suzuki. "Abraham
Lincoln, 1863," said Suzuki.

The teacher snapped at the class, "Class, you should
be ashamed! Suzuki, who is new to our country, knows
more about its history than you do."

She heard a loud whisper, "F*ck the Japs."

"Who said that?" she demanded.

Suzuki put his hand up. "Lee Iacocca, 1982."

At that point, a student in the back said, "I'm
gonna puke."

The teacher glares and asks, "All right! Now, who
said that?"

Again, Suzuki says, "George Bush to the Japanese
Prime Minister, 1991."

Now furious, another student yells, "Oh, yeah? S*ck
this!"

Suzuki jumps out of his chair, waving his hand, and
shouts to the teacher, "Bill Clinton, to Monica
Lewinsky, 1997!"

Now, with almost a mob hysteria, someone said, "You
little *****! If you say anything else, I'll kill
you!"

Suzuki frantically yells at the top of his voice,
"Gary Condit to Chandra Levy, 2001!"

The teacher fainted. As the class gathered around
the teacher on the floor, someone said, "Oh, *****,
we're f*cked!"

Suzuki said, "The Taliban, 2001!"
