Who said the following?

A little fun thing.

One president of the United States, in a State of the Union address, declared that all Americans should have the following rights:

The right to a useful and renumerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation

The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation

The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living

The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad

The right of every family to a decent home

The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health

The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment

The right to a good education

So which president made this "Second Bill of Rights" part of what year State of the Union message?

It must be one of those pinko, liberal, socialists the right wingers are always trying to warn us against, whoever it is. ;)

Franklin D. Roosevelt, “The Economic Bill of Rights”
Excerpt from 11 January 1944 message to Congress on the State of the Union

Did I pass?

Bullseye 350!

But still prefer "From Each According To His Abilities, To Each According To His Needs" ... which summarizes very well also the 'spirit' of this board.

So I may ask myself: Is Pelican Forums a 'extreme-left-wing-communist' bulletin board? :)

Food for thought .. must be the full moon :D

FDR was a Democrat that many of us right wingers would support today. Somewhere along the way Democrats lost their way and evolved into todays "pinko liberal socialists". It's too bad; they used to be relevant.

Groesbeck Hurricane 06-23-2005 06:05 AM

Keep in mind that until the early '60s that both parties had left and right wing sides.

Mule 06-23-2005 06:42 AM

Jordi, although we have a few (loud) "extreme-left-wing-communist" types, the board as a whole is pretty well balanced. If you think this is bad, you should look at off topic on the "other" board.

techweenie 06-23-2005 07:10 AM

How about this one? Can you guess the President?

---------------------
"Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels --men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, we may never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion."

Here's a better one:
"Marriage is a great institution. But I'm not ready for an institution yet."

jriera 06-23-2005 07:32 AM

techweenie: Dwight D. Eisenhower
Mule: Mae West

techweenie 06-23-2005 07:44 AM

Jordi: good going!

legion 06-23-2005 08:50 AM

Ahhh....FDR. The man who introduced us to the wonderful world of deficit spending.

Moneyguy1 06-23-2005 09:27 AM

Legion..

Wasn't there a few problems along FDR's way like a DEPRESSION and a WAR?

legion 06-23-2005 10:38 AM

Still, he opened a can of worms that will eventually have to be dealt with.

350HP930 06-23-2005 11:07 AM

Well, that can of worms was opened up long before he dealt with it.

How do you think he should have handled the retirements of many americans disappearing due to the nature of the financial system of the time?

tabs 06-23-2005 11:12 AM

During the Great One there was no liquidity in the system... FDR put some grease in the system to loosen it up...to get it moving again...

Another thoughtful post from our liberal member who is masquerading as a conservative.:D I'm buying, Jeff, next time we drink. Seriously, don't get caricatures confused as facts. "Liberal" is indeed quite a dirty word these days. All the good public policy positions are now assumed to be the "conservative" positions, and all the nastiest ideas are thought to be the "liberal" platform. This is marketing genius and political savvy, but unfortunately it is not the truth.

Superman 06-23-2005 04:18 PM

Here's one of my favorites. So much so that it is printed on my binder which holds all my most used reference information in my briefcase. Some of you will know it simply because I have posted it here before:

"All that serves labor serves the nation. All that harms labor is treason. If a man tells you he loves America yet hates labor, he is a liar. If a man tells you he trusts America yet fears labor, he is a fool. There is no America without labor, and to fleece the one is to rob the other."

Only for those who listen to the right-biased media outlets. Listen to them tap-dance when they blast 'tax and spend' and 'big government' as "liberal" while excusing runaway government growth and booming deficits as somehow "fiscally responsible" if a Republican does it.
