Years and years ago I was watching a race, probably an F1 race, when during one of the breaks a man demonstrated the speed of the F1 cars by sending a family car around the oval track. I think it may have been a station wagon. As the car slowly accelerated, he continued to explain facts about the F1. When the car finally reached the halfway point of the track another car took off. I cannot remember what kind of car it was, maybe a Porsche??? When the second car reached the halfway point of the track the first car was about 3/4 the way around the track and suddenly the F1 raced off the start/finish line and beat both cars around the track in this one lap race!
I have since searched for this video but haven't found it. I thought maybe someone had the link or an idea where I might find it if anyone remembers seeing such a demonstration.
If so, who was the guy doing all the explaining?

Haven't seen that one, Dave. Freddie Spenser did the same thing with a bike at Laguna Seca back in the mid-late 80s. Pretty cool stuff.

I heard of one where a Top Fuel car was staged and another car (Cup car?) passed it doing somewhere in the mid 180's. The Top Fuel car won the "drag race", beating it to the 1/4 mile mark.

i am drawing a complete blank on the presenter, but i do remember that video

1st car was something along the lines of a 4-door opel/vauxhall
2nd car was a 911
3rd was MacLaren F1

we'll see if it comes to me who it was....


it was cool b/c while the first car took off, in the background behind the comentator, the driver was sipping tea... then slowly getting into the cockpit when the 911 took off... they all finished basically nose-to-tail of each other... f1, then 911, then the saloon

There's one at Silverstone with Coulthard in the F1 car and some other top-notch drivers in a economy wagon thing and an E50 Sedan. Coulthard gives them at least a half-track head start and catches them pretty easily. Here..

I remember this too. It's quite old. The driver of the F1 car was Niki Lauda.

I vaguely remember the clip. I think the second car was a 928 and all three crossed the finish line together.

They did one of these for Indy many years ago. The had a bunch of cars drive about 15 mph and had a car with incar camera drive around them at about 55 mph. They quadrupled the film speed and it looked like someone was driving on the highway at 220mph.
