I can't see how this can lead to anything good. I can see why everyone voted the way they did except for Kennedy. WTF?

It's just flat out scarey. Bushism at work here again, taking care of his corporate buddies.

Um, that had nothing to do with it.
The justices who voted against it were those who would commonly be described as "pro-Bush". Besides, this is mostly an issue in run-down urban areas, the very same areas where Republicans are all but extinct.

Misinformed. I do agree that this decision is flat-out wrong. However, they justices who voted in favor of it are the left-leaning contingent, while the dissenters are those who are typically a bit on the right.

Of course I'm misinformed. I don't care. I just blame him for everything anymore. He makes it easy.

Yeah, this is outrageous. Can't imagine what i would do if the gov. stepped in and paid me whatever they felt like in exchange for bulldozing my house. My reaction would probably pull several felonies and a prison sentence.

This sort of thing has been going on in impoverished areas for decades. Look at most major cities, the interstates run through the run-down areas. That land was seized because it didn't belong to influential people. It took a city seizing wealthy people's land to get to the Supreme Court.
The scary thing is the bit about "Local officials know how best to help cities". My city just seized a city block of [run-down] property to build a 6,000 seat arena. There was an advisory referendum on this and the vote was 70% against, which the mayor ignored. There is a 12,000 seat arena about a mile away that is already under-used. This new arena will fail, and because it is city-owned, guess who foots the bill? Local officials know best, huh?

St. Louis has been doing this for years - not blighted areas but rather any area in which a builder wants to put up a big mall. Fair market value with moving expenses are forced upon those who live near highly traveled intersections. The local universities take whatever they like as well. Many have fought this progress - all have lost. Apparently Wal-Mart and Lowe's have eminent domain in America.

As mentioned this has been going on forever. In fact some benefit greatly from this. If properly negotiated one can walk away with very good compensation. A good friend is one of the top Emanate Domain attorneys in the US. He's done very, very well for his clients (and himself) fighting off the overtakers....especially down in Atlantic City.
