when you see Porsche wheels on a VW...

we've been talking about this on another forum, and i'd like to know what people here think about this:

when you see Porsche wheels on a Volkswagen Golf, Jetta, Passat, Ford Mustang, or some other car which doesn't have the Porsche badge on it do you think:

"wow, that looks nice! he even left the Porsche crest on the wheels!"

or

"man, some punk kid just stole those wheels and there's a 993 or Boxster somewhere sitting on cement blocks right now"

i'd like to see what everyone here thinks about this modern version of this "styling trend".

an example:

The phone dials came on only one year of 911, 1984 (I think) and are the considered the ugly kid in the basement. I have them on my 1977 911, and think they look nice. The phone dials could of course be found on 928's and 944's, be it different sizes.

I saw an Audi TT the other day, with aftermaket wheels that look remenisant of Phone dials. Perhaps the look is coming back.

Better the old not sought after phone dials be found on a Jetta (never a Mustang), than waisting away in a basement/garage or flea market turned into a clock.

I sold a set of 16" Fuchs to a VW guy once. I've seen them on Karmann Ghias, and they look great. But the Ghia's different from a VW Golf, I guess.

In El Lay I used to see lots of fully polished Fuchs on Nissan and Toyota mini-pickups.

My first assumption is *not* that they swapped wheels off the 911 sitting in the garage at home.

is your next assumption that they swapped the wheels off a 911 that is now sitting on cinder blocks with the stereo missing?

In most cases I think it looks good. But I am as much a VW fan as I am a Porsche fan.

I find it interesting that many of the wheels that look good on the early H2O cars are the wheels that Porsche fans usually dislike.

How about Mercedes wheels?

I think the C2 Cups look good on just about anything:

Thumbs up

Here is my personal contribution. 911 headlights, seats, and rear brakes. 914 front brakes. 944 steering wheel and column. Boxster rims and tires. Don't much care if anyone likes it, cause it was one hot little SOB. Started out with a $50 body, but kinda got carried away.

Forgive me for asking, but isn't the BC for Porsche unique?

If so, wouldn't there have to be either special adapters or installation of Porsche spindles/discs in order to put Porsche wheels on another brand?

Bob, It's pretty easy, just have the rotors/hubs redrilled to the correct bolt pattern. On some of the old VW busses, Porsche suspension and/or hubs or brakes have been swapped, so then they just bolt on.

Re-drilling hubs is not exactly a big challenge for a good machine shop.

H&R makes adapters to go from 5x100 to 5x130. They even make a 4x100 to 5x130.

As pointed out above, some of the styles of rims Porsche has used over the years really compliment cars of vastly different body styles (slab-sided 1st generation Golf for example) In order to qualify for keeping the Porsche badges, please make sure you have ripped out the drivetrain & suspension and replaced them with Porsche components.

I thought this was gonna be about Fuchs on beetles. What does that make me think of here in LA? Shaved heads and tatoos. Rap music and tacos. Cars that bounce off the ground while parked. Pomona swap meet.

I want to buy an old bug/beetle and when I upgrade my P-car to 16s put the 15s on the bug. Also, I will have to get it resprayed to a Guards Red and then also have a 3.2 liter Carrera put in the back. Ok a little drastic but I am really after the Porsche matching look on a VW bug.

Seems to me that all of the newer front engine VW's look pretty silly, no matter what you do to them. Classic air-cooled VW's can look pretty good with Porsche wheels, as long as the sporty look isn't overdone. Just MHO.

Well, remember, without a Porsche, there wouldn't have been VW, and after that, without VW, we wouldn't have Porsche

I like bugs (air cooled ones) with Fuchs and have sold and traded many sets to the VW guys and had them on some of my old VWs.
