yep, paxil does indeed make you fat.
I've struggled with co-morbid depression and Asperger's Syndrome my whole life, I've found that the best results for me have come through careful vitamin intake and plenty of excersize along with careful examination of my life and where Im going. |

Weight gain is a common side effect for SSRI medications.
"One research group assessed weight changes in patients randomly assigned to long-term treatment with Fluoxetine (Prozac), Sertraline (Zoloft), or Paroxetine (Paxil). They found that the number of patients with 7% weight gain from baseline was significantly greater for Paxil-treated compared with either Prozac-treated or Zoloft-treated patients. Others found similar findings with Paxil being much more likely to cause weight gain (up to 25% of subjects) than either Prozac (6.8%) or Citalopram (Celexa) (3.9%)." Studies have also shown that they slow down your metabolism. You are obviously exercising, but is you food intake the same as when you weren't taking the medication?

Man you are lucky it worked for you. My wife was on Paxil for about 5 years and was slowling going insane because of it. She has been clean now for 3 years and is pretty much herself again. But she was sick for almost two years trying to get off it. I also had two friends kill themselves after being on it for over two years. Stuffs like heroin.

Herbs may be an option. A high end herb/drug store in Marina Del Rey is the ticket if interested . I could locate the name and address if wanted.

I would write down what you eat over the course of a week to really see what you intake is on a daily basis. Read labels... Carbs, proteins, fats, who cares... It all boils down to calories in vs. calories burned. You may be surprised by how many calories you are taking in. Add that to the fact the your metabolism has slowed due to aging and medication you may not be burning enough at the gym to keep up.
IIRC, an individual has to burn or cut out an additional 35,000 calories to lose 10lbs. If you are only exercising and not controlling intake, that is a lot of time on the tread mill.

I guess this would be the very definition of "fat and happy"
I'm 6'2", 230-240; I was 260 a couple years ago. The only way you're going to see me @ 190 is laying in a hospital bed with needles in my arms and a feeding tube down my throat.

swimming slow 30min laps 3x week doesn't reduce weight although it'll buff you up.

Janus,
I started off on Paxil several years ago after suffering with depression and anxiety my whole life. Like you, I could eat 'til the cows came home and never gain an ounce. I am 6'2" and weighed around 165 for years. After starting on Paxil, my metabolism slowed to a crawl and I gained about 30 pounds. After becoming frustrated with the side effects (weight gain, no energy, sexual "difficulty", etc.) I inquired about an alternative. My doc put me on Celexa, and eventually Lexapro (a more current version of Celexa). I have to say that Lexapro has been very good to me. The side effects are not nearly as noticeable. The sexual side effects are either non-existent, or not enough to notice. I have to say that I haven't gained any more weight, but I haven't lost it either (I haven't really tried). Point is, I don't have the anxiety that I used to and the side effects are minimal.
