Officer Shot in Hawaiin Gardens

I was helping my wife and cousin get the kids loaded for a trip to Disneyland.

The cousins phone rang, and it was her brother, letting her know it was his buddy that was killed in Hawaiin Gardens.

He was at his wedding two weeks ago.

Hate when this stuff hits so close to home.

My heart goes out to the family and bride.

Michael

I hope it wasn't another cop, like last time this topic came up on Pelican.

In light of how few death penalties are carried out in California, I find myself hoping the taxpayers are spared the cost of a trial...

pretty sure it was another cop, the other forum would indicate such.

i vote for pulling an IRA on the pukes when they're caught. you take a nice 3/4" paddle bit (the big flat mammas used in woodworking) and drill from the kneecap through the back of their knee.
and if, indeed, this is a police officer, i say do the same to their wrists in a lateral fashion.

then put the pukes into a room with the victims family for one hour, with pure and absolute immunity from the law. (of course log chains would be dangling from the walls, along with pipe wrenches, golf clubs, and angle-grinders). just to be thorough, you understand.

I wasn't clear. We had an LA cop (deputy?) shot about a year ago -- it was posted here. He was later determined to have been accidentally shot by another cop.

flyenby, is right.

Am I the only one who thinks it's strange that the guy was interviewing in a known gang neighborhood without his partner beside him?

By all accounts, this guy was a real top cop - one of those guys everybody knows and respects. I don't understand why he was working alone.

Jerry Ortiz was a very good friend of mine for the past 15 years. We boxed on the LASD Boxing Team together. We were both Force Instructors and worked the Gang Enforcement Team. Most of us cops in LA work alone in some of the roughest neighborhoods in the nation. Gang cops usually work in pairs. Jerry had gone into work early so he could interview someone. While talking to this person, the monster Jose Orozco (suspect) shot Jerry at point blank range in his face. Jerry did not have a chance. Just last year, Jerry was awarded the Madal of Valor for bravery. His brother in law (Officer Gonzales from Chino Prison) was killed last year by a convict. Jerry leaves behind a wife of 3 weeks, a 6 year old son, and a 16 year old son.

As I type this, I sit here crying because he was such a good person. Last Saturday, he and I were talking about some arrests we made together, the boxing team, and our families. He was talking about getting his WBO card to be a cornerman for boxer Mike Anochando. As we departed, we shook hands, gave each other a hug, and wished each other Happy Father's Day.

I am going to miss him dearly,,,,,,,David

The suspect was taken into custody at about midnight....Suspect arrested

So sorry to read about this; I've been out of town and missed it. I can only imagine the sadness, David, every time I hear that a Deputy was shot I pray that it is not my other friend on LASD, (also a Pelican), or you.

Wow. Bummer, David. I'm sorry to hear about that. It hurts worse when it's that close.

It's a shame the suspect wasn't killed while resisting arrest. On the other hand, the fact that this didn't happen speaks highly for the LASD!

Thanks for all of your support. We all appreciate it. I still don't want to believe it. The worst part is coming....when I have to look in the eyes of his 2 sons during the funeral.
