What is wrong with nudity?

When I was a kid, I can remember watching movies with my parents, and when a nude woman appeared on the screen, I was told to cover my eyes. I promise to ask my parents why they did this. For now, I'd like to hear people's opinions on why, as a culture, we find nudity harmful to children.

cool_chick 07-16-2005 05:30 AM

Well, it depends on how old they are. Some experts claim that when kids are exposed at too young of an age, it "overstimulates" them at a time when they're not ready.

Though, I"m sure we all seen nudity before "we were supposed to"....are we really so "damaged?"

Good post strother.

Probably depends on the context - just straight nudity (someone walking around naked) is probably just not an issue. Of course - for youngsters - naked=sex.

But Erotica into the context and then you have a problem depending on the level. I'd much rather expose my kid to nudity than violence on TV.

In a suburb of Houston, a developer built an enormous strip mall, I think with a Bed, Bath & Beyond and a Borders, etc. The design was a cheap knock off of Greek and Roman architecture. On top of various columns -- I'm talking 30-50 feet in the air -- are knock-offs of David and the Venus de Milo. People went CRAZY. And then you have John Ashcroft and his covering up of the statues at the Justice Department a few years ago. (Gonzalez just had them uncovered.)

At the University of Nebraska - Kearney, they built a clock tower that had greek styling, and it had horses carved into it, about 20 feet up. Anyway, these horses originally were male horses and the woman dean at the time found it offensive, so their dongs were all chisled off.

Let's think back to the original European jokers who settled this great land.

That's right, it was the Puritans and their ilk, trying to escape persecution overseas. So they left for a place where they could practice their bizarre brand of mind control.

It lasts to this very day.

Joeaksa 07-16-2005 07:27 AM

Really agree with Aaron above. Its the puritan mentality that pervades our society to this day.

Grew up in the same atmosphere as a kid. Moved at 35 or so to Europe (Germany & Denmark) and spent over 10 years there. People sunbathe in the nude or minimum topless there, and go to sports clubs and swim and sauna nude, men and women together.

No one thinks a thing about it, its just the English and Americans who are prude and cover up. After a while I got used to it and could care less about being nude outside or in a pool/hot tub.

The majority of the Europeans have the same open feeling about sex. While for many in this country its "dirty" and done only in the dark behind a locked door at night, the Europeans for the most part feel that its natural and fun. Personally I like that feeling and have stopped going out with American girls long ago unless they were a bit liberal in this area. Not that I want nor expect to shag everything in sight but sex is not dirty, its a pleasant experience between two adults (in my house at least!) and does not need to be hidden in the bedroom with the lights out.

This was a complete crock of brown material! I am from the same state as Ashcroft, in fact had him as one of my University teachers years ago, but am ashamed of his actions here.

Covering up a partially nude statute is just way over the line. Anyone who feels that this is bad needs some attitude readjustment IMHO.

I wonder what conscious thought led him to think that covering up a statue -- actual art -- was a reasonable thing to do? It kindof boggles the mind, even for some of us righties.

strother 07-16-2005 08:15 AM

Well, I would guess I disagree with Ashcroft on 90% of issues, but it is my understanding that it has always been somewhat of a sport for the media photographers to get a picture of any justice department official in front of the statues. I'd never heard of the sport. I think it became big when Edwin Meese was trying to stamp out pornography in the 80s.

I was feeling fairly good after the first picture, but now am afraid that I might be blinded for the rest of the day!!! Hope I can make it downstairs where the tequila is to take a medicinal shot and ease the pain!

Can someone please cover #2 up??!! At least you did not show the front! :)

Yes; well done, pwd. (maybe even a little over done);)

My thoughts exactly.

Funny how you can go to just about any art museum and see tons of nudity... then as soon as you step out of the place it is illegal.

Nothing wrong with the human body, I think we should have nude beach's etc. in the USA. Problem is we are all such a bunch of pervs...
:D

Reminds me of a remote beach in Kauai that you had to hike several mile to get to. Then they had the nerve to put up a sign where the trail got to the beach "No nude sunbathing"! The tradition was to hang you cloths on the sign.

You feel funny at a nude beach or park in Europe where everyone is nude but after a while get used to it and stop staring. After you see so many people without clothes for a longer time it just becomes second nature and do not even think about it.

For me it took a long time when I returned to the states to get used to wearing clothes when swimming or sunbathing. Just does not feel right now...
