Recommend A Hotel In NYC?

I'm going to New York City in mid-August, to take a friend sightseeing, and am looking for a reasonably priced hotel. Nothing luxurious, just clean and comfortable, ideally smallish with something interesting, maybe mid-town.

Any personal favorites you'd like to share?

Forget a bargain.

The wife and I stayed at the Walforf Astoria last month. Beautiful.

If you are on a budget, have you looked at options for hostels or bed and breakfasts?

I should have been more clear. I'm thinking of $250/night. Surely there's stuff in this range.

John, Definitely use a bargain site like www.hotels.com , I think that is the one that I used last time I needed a hotel in NYC, (~6 months ago), you pick the neighborhood(s) you will accept and then put in your "bid". I started w/ 3 star @ $100 a night, it rejected this, so I changed it to 2.5 stars and BINGO!, a normally $400 a night room for $100 X 3 nights. It was a nice hotel called The Metropolitan on 51st and Lexington, no hidden charges or catches, I will simply never use any other method to reserve a room.

Oh yeah, I got that deal w/ ~24 hrs. notice before I flew into town. The only thing I would change is starting out more specific on the neighborhood, (I picked 1/2 of lower Manhattan to increase my odds), you can always add areas or raise your bid if the 1st shot doesn't work. You will either get a $400 room for $100, or for $250 you should get a $500+ room w/ a little luck. Give it a shot, nothing to lose.

We always stay at either the Renaissance Times Square or the Lexington. Both are right at $200/nite. In fact I think I am there 14th for 5 days. Maybe we should do a left coast get-together with the local NYC gang.... they are always looking for an excuse to meet at that Beer and Brat Garden on the west side.......

I second Michael's recommendations. There's always the Marriott Marquis if you want to be at the epicenter of the Times Square neon buzz.

DO let me know when you are going to be in town, and I will take a break from making the world safe for Capitalism to quaff mucho beers.

consider the lucerne on the upper west side. Ask for one of their newly rennovated rooms. it is the place people put their parents up in when they come to visit

Great hotel, super nice people, pretty good location. I personally think it is one of the best deals out there,

Hotel Algonquin on 44th. Nothing more interesting, especially if you are into art/literature. Look it up and read about it and you will want to stay there.

But use a discount site to book it unless you want to pay retail.

Algonquin's a good call. Nice cabaret too.

If you have ever read Dorothy Parker you know about this.

W!

Just stayed at the W San Diego and it was one of the most memorable stays of my life.

I do not know if they run deals at all, a night will run you $450 or so. But worth it if you want to complete the whole NYC experiance. They go out of their way to make sure your stay is unforgetable.

Being a Starwood Preferred Guest member I cash in points for stays so my stay is uaually free. With all I charge om My SPG Amex card every month due to business expenses I get a lot of points to spend.

I've stayed at several hotels in NYC. I'd currently prefer the W (there are 3 of them in NYC if memory serves me right).
