Boxster Raffle For Charity: Do These Work/Would You Buy?

I'm on the board of directors for the children's museum in my area, and one thing I've thought about doing for a fundraiser is raffling off a Boxster (yes, I know, a 997 would be cooler, but don't think the numbers would work). Like other raffles I've seen, I'd charge $100 per ticket, with a maximum 1000 tickets sold. If we don't sell over a certain number (say 500), we'd split the cash raised with the winner vs. giving them the car.

Is this something that you'd purchase a raffle ticket for? Has anyone done this in the past with any success?

Thanks for the insight.

Steve

I wouldn't buy...but I wouldn't buy a Boxster. I tend to buy raffle tickets only if I would actually enjoy the prize.

I worked on a raffle for my daughter's school. It was a lot of work. We didn't sell enough tickets so we did the cash split instead of giving away a car. Most of our tickets were sold by parents. We used an web site www.dreamcarraffles.com to advertise. We weren't able to determine how many tickets they sold, but they did sell the winning ticket.

After all expenses and prizes we had a net profit of about $15,000. We decided that we would not repeat the raffle next year as we felt most of our parents had already tapped their sources for sales and would not get repeat buyers. Our outside sales efforts (local paper, posters, local direct mail) did not generate enough sales - it was the parents who carried us.

Thanks, Lee. That's the kind of insight I was looking for. Unfortunately, I found that your experience applies to any type of charity fund raiser you try, so I was hoping to find a way around the "have to hit my friends up again" syndrome, but probably have to settle that that's part of fundraising.

Trust me on this...Lee hit us up here on the board, if the prize was a kit car speedster?...On my earlier post, I mentioned I didn't want a Boxster? I should have also mentioned that I only buy raffle tickets from causes I would have donated to anyway...
