Tornado Alley may have alot of tornadoes, but for sheer power, come to Alabama. IIRC, Alabama has had more F5 tornadoes than any other state. One came through just north of where I live a few years ago (through a heavily wooded area, luckily) and not only removed all the trees but took the grass up off the ground. Nothing left but dirt. Unfortunately everyone in the path of it was killed. Even people in their basements.

According to this site, there have only been 4 F5 tornadoes hit Alabama since 1900.

11 in KS, which I thought we had one in the last 5 years, but it may of only been an F4 ------ Just looked it up, it was an F4 that hit Wichita in May of 99.


9 in OK.

8 in TX.


Without doing some more counting to see if any other state has had more, I'd say that KS would hold the record for F5's.

Yeah, the site I had looked at only listed them since 1950 (still showed 5 for Alabama since 1950 and I had mentally included the Lawrence Co, TN one since it was about 20 miles from my house).

The following site still lists Alabama with having as many F5s as any other state:

The disconcerting thing to me is that they are all clustered around north Alabama (where I am). :>(

Yeah, it looked like you want to steer clear of Birmingham, as the maps I looked at showed that it was hit twice.

Last year we still lived in Harper Kansas, we had on a single night, 8 tornadoes touch down in the county, all within a couple of miles from home.

Watch the 'sample video'. At the 1:20 mark on the video, that particular tornado was maybe 1/4-3/8's of a mile south of where we were. We actually had roof damage, and tree damage at the house.


Roughly 1.5 week later we had this:

Roughly 16 tornadoes touch down from that series of storms, and probably 6 or so in Harper county again.

One of those actually ran the same path as the video'd tornado above. The first tornado did damage to the school and destroyed several houses, the second tornado didn't really have anything left to eat.

The map is a little deceiving, as it doesn't have a mile ledger on it. Harper and Anthony are only 7miles apart.
