Evaporative Coolers... are they any good?
My office (4000 ft2) is located in the top floor of a one hundred year old, 8-storey warehouse. Traditional air conditioning is simply too expensive to install given the rent we pay and the nature of the building's construction.
I am wondering if anyone has first hand experince using portable evaporative coolers that they would be willing to share.

If its humid, they won't work at all. They cool by evaporation and all you'll do is add to the humidity load.

Hugh is 100% correct on this one, they will not work very well at all in humid environments. My parents have one that works fantastically, but they live in Salt Lake City.

I looked at a weather page for your area. Your Dew Point in and around Winnipeg runs right around 70F. This is pretty high, and would not be very effective for evap cooling.

I live in Phoenix and they work very well. Of course our normal humidity is around 10% most of the time! When it gets above 40% or so its not going to help, so in your situation would look at a real A/C unit.

Have you thought about spot air conditioners (if this is for the computers)? That could be an interim soln.
