As a 'card holding' Native American, I simply do not understand how organizations, such as the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media, view Native mascots as a negative.
I'm pretty sure every athletic club, from elementary school through professional level teams, is very proud of who they are and what they are named. ...as far as I'm concerned...just another group of people with nothing better to do... ...now, where did I put my fire-water?

LOL.
I guess names like 'redskins' could be construed as racist. But what about names like Apache or Cherokee? Teams give themselves these names because of the prowess of the warriors. If anything its a name to honor them. If we start down this path, we will have to rename half of Michigan! Pontiac, Cadillac, Saginaw..... |

"Fighting Irish", what's with the drunk leprechaun? Hey not all Irish are midgets! And if they were, they could possibly be " Happy Drunks". Being of Norwegian descent I take offense to the Minnesota "Vikings". I have been called a "Horny" guy but you you won't see me walkin' around town in one of those hats( a lawsuit waiting to happen). Be proud of what you are and where you came from and if they want to name a team the "Is that all your going to do, just sit around drinking beer and working on the PORSCHE"......well..so be it..

While most team names attempt to honor the people they represent, some images are clearly racist and hurtful.
Let's look at the Cleveland Indians Chief Wahoo; imagine if I take the same image, lose the feather and make the skin brown. Let's call our team the Cleveland Watusi's. How would that go over? Or let's give him dreidels and call our team the Fighting Rabbis.

Another example of changed mascots to be PC. Elon college just changed their name about a year or 2 ago from the fighting christians to the phenix.
This has really annoyed me, what's next my Univ. can't use the name spartans?

Soon all team names, universities, and towns will be named with just a series of numbers.
"Oh, you live in 838190? I grew up there but moved to 4813033 to go to college at 482, then got a job at 92384."

I find it difficult to claim racism when something is being CELEBRATED!!!!!
The fans are proud of the team names, they're not making fun of them. Oh well....

I agree we're all probably too sensitive about this stuff but it seems to me that political correctness is a knife that only cuts one way. Why is it that it's OK to use a foolish cartoon to depict native Americans but you wouldn't dare depict an African-American in the same fashion.
How do you feel about the new logo for the Cleveland Brothers?

!I agree with you 100% that you will never see the African American spin on mascots or public displays such as your great rendition. We Native Americans just aren't as good at follow-through with the anti-race profiling thing. Damn...that is still funny !
