Best. Billboard. Ever.

OK, maybe not in history, but I cannot remember when I've seen better. I am not even a 'vette guy, (except for '63-'67 Stingrays), and this thing made me feel like I could not go another minute w/o owning one. Isn't that what ads are supposed to do?

That is pretty sweet. I must say after taking the new Z06 for a short test spin, I am impressed with the engine performance. Very few advertisements really make me want to buy a car anymore, I think most rely on their reputation to sell and for some it works. The best advertisement companies in my opinion for cars now are MINI, BMW and Porsche but many of these are print ads. BMW is one of the only ones that I have seen TV ads for lately besides GM autos.

Here is another shot of it. My pictures don't do it justice, it is just huge and in your face+ right on Sunset and Doheny where Beverly Hills ends and the Sunset Strip begins. The road curves sharply to the right and the scenery changes, you are suddenly in party/nightlife land w/ the famous clubs and restaurants, etc... It's a beautiful drive on a summer night when you don't have a care in the world.

The "No Cruising" sign is kind of ironic, but the strip had gotten so out of control on weekend nights the last couple of years that they had to pass some anti-cruising law.

Oh yeah, those are the most expensive billboards on earth. Most of the ads are custom made just for them, (and sometimes Times Square), they really got their money's worth this time, IMO.

I had no idea what 'cruising' was until my wife told me that is what they used to do in her little bitty town in Iowa - drive up and down the "strip" which was about 3 blcoks long.

"What did you do?"

"We cruised"

"But what is that?

"Just driving up and down the road."

"But what did you do?"

"WE CRUSIED!"

"But you just drove up and down a stretch of road no longer than 3/10's of a mile and turned around and did it all over agian?"

"Thats it."

"Wow - sounds pretty freak'n boring..."

"Sometimes we would change cars."

"I guess it's better than getting drunk all the time and screw'n."

"That was later."

"and thats enough..."

It's hard to imagine anyone NOT knowing what "cruising" is/was. Such a large part of our automotive culture evolved from endless hours killing time, tires, and $1.25gal gas on Van Nuys Blvd. Those were indeed great times.

We didn't do it growing up - most of the time was spent on the beach or when it rained, in somebodie's basement playing pool and trying to get your fingers stinky!

You can give anyone a quick lesson in what cruising was by sitting them down to watch American Graffitti. That was a pretty accurate portrayal of the way it was in my small town (Spokane).

I was down in behind the Orange curtain back in may and I was doing some work at a company who had a neighbor that was a billboard printer. They would hang the freshly made billboards on the wall of the building when complete. I didn't get a picture of the billboard so I'm lame but the picture was of an original Z and the cation said "35 years of *****'n."

It was pretty cool.

How did my "great billboard" thread turn into this??

I guess that's why they call it "OT".

Does AFI still own Greystone? I went there years ago. Very cool. Dates back to the Fairbanks/Pickford era, as I recall.

The end of Sunset where it curves onto Doheny? Hey, isn't that THE "dead man's curve", where: "Well Doc, all I remember is..."
Somebody was clever in placing that billboard. In the Jan & Dean song, the race began at Sunset & Vine, "all the way...to dead man's curve"...and a lyric mentions pulling up at Doheny....

Beverly Hills owns it and have made it a park. I've never been in the mansion, just looked through the windows.

My first job out here in So Cal was working for Kevin Doheny and Larry Fullerton with the "Trojan Horse". The AAFuel Funny Car.

This billboard turned quite a few heads a couple of months ago...

Hope you wore ear protection. Or, do you respond to questions with a "Huh???" Man, just sitting in the stands, those funny cars had to be 140 db's...
