What I did on my summer vacation, by Don Davis and family.
So we drove across the country from Mesa, AZ to Washington D.C. Our first stop was in Oklahoma City and we went to the OKC Memorial. They did a very nice job and I highly recommend visiting it if in the area.
![]() Then off to Memphis (Germantown) for the night. Wish I had more time, as I would have liked to meet up with Jurgen. Maybe next time. Nashville was next to meet our daughter at BNA as she was coming in from Wisconsin. She visited her grandparents there. After we picked her up, it was off to Horse Branch Kentucky to my Dad’s place. 60 acres of rolling hills and he’s decided he wants to get into the horse business. The second day there, I mowed about 10 acres with a finish bush hog then went into Owensboro for barbeque. Day 3, we spread manure over approx 10-13 acres. Here's my Dad and my son. ![]() Hey, I’m on vacation and he’s putting me to work. Time to go. Blountville, Tn was our next stop at my Mom’s place. We checked out the Biltmore Estate in Asheville NC. Massive place. Hard to comprehend how much money they had to build and maintain that kind of place. ![]() A few days later, we hit the road again for Manassas, Va. Stayed at a friend’s place then we all headed into DC the next morning. I had put out a feeler for DC/NOVA Pelicans but I realized it would be difficult to get away from the family so I did not push the issue. We knew going in that DC cannot be done in 4 days but we did ok. We stayed around 14th and Rhode Island. Apparently, that is very close to Dave but did not know until later. ![]() The last day in DC, we were walking from the metro to our room and discussing dinner. I heard a distinctive engine sound screaming down the road. “That’s GOT to a Porsche” I thought and began scanning the traffic. I spot a silver impact bumper and watch as it passes. Wait a sec! The driver looks a little familiar, HEY! It has Vermont plates! That’s Noah! I trot back to corner light where he has stopped and shout “NOAH!” He looked up, laughed and pulled over. Goofy, goofy stuff. We all know how big the DC area is and in all of it, I spot a fellow pelican. Ah, my trip just got a boost. Got to briefly meet someone from the BBS. Great to meet you Noah. Hope to see you again with more time. How was the ‘Fat Cat’? ![]() Quick photo op later and on his recommendation, went to DuPont Circle for dinner. Strolling around and checking out the restaurants (and there were many) we picked Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. Wonderful filet and topped it off with a nice single malt. Life is good.

The next day we went to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial and Mount Vernon.
![]() ![]() Headed back to my Mom’s for a few days of R&R then began the drive home. I used my laptop for watching DVD’s with an FM modulator to put the audio into the van stereo. Worked great. Also picked up a DeLorme GPS Street Atlas that was VERY helpful, saved us lots of time, and was fun to play with. ![]() I’m back home now, ![]() went to work last week. Yuk ![]() School started. But I have good news! ![]() ![]() So, what did you do on your summer vacation?

That sounds like a great trip. Weird seeing Noah in all that humanity. Pretty neat.

Looks like fun! Good to meet up with Noah, glad it happened. Too darn humid this time of year for me...

what is this thing you call "vacation"?
We had a major power shift and I'm getting a new boss official 9/1. My "vacation" was scheduled for the week right after I got the first news of it. Spent 3 of the 5 days dealing with pre-transition crap. But, next week I go to Laguna Seca to run for 3 days. So that should make up for it ![]() |

What did (am) I doing over my two month summer vacation: Driving the 911. Other than that, we went to Pismo Beach, CA for a couple of weeks, where I got to see about 100 Pelicans (literally)
