car stolen: need ins advice quick

my new Subie was stolen last night from outside my apartment. Only complication is that the insurance is in my wife's and my name at the house. We are still legally married, and in the same zip code. Will the ins company give me a hard time? Seems like it shouldn't matter where the car was stolen...it could be parked anywhere. I could say I was staying at a friend's place...

Ok, so what's the issue? Because you're both not 'together' ie: relationship on the rocks? -if so, it's irrelevant. It's in both your names, you pay your bills yeah? Go ahead, call the insurance. In fact, if you DON'T do it within a specified time , they could forefit your policy.......read your terms and aggreement..........

I don't think that it would be an issue. I mean, what if it was stolen outside a restaurant?

I don't think the location of the car would be a problem.

Which insurance company do you use? I think it would be best to be 100% honest, otherwise you'll be trying to stick to some story... A theft would be the type of thing they're going to spend more time investigating, so if you say you were just staying there overnight, then find out that you live there, or whatever... it could open you up to some technicallity. I'm not a lawyer, not an insurance guy, but I can imagine crazy things happening if you aren't honest. You're the victim here.

Whew! Glad to know it was "only" a Subie...Did you bother to call the cops? In Portland, they don't even stop by if a car is stolen, the just take a report over the phone.

well, i suppose I should have done that before. It was on my list of things to do to split it off...

Called the police, they took the vin and my name. Not even my phone number. Said to call back after 6pm and maybe they could get to it then.

well, I think Bryan is right (holy crap, I didn't just say that, did I?!?). If I try and fabricate a story it will end up a nightmare. Seems to me that a person can have more than one residence, and if they are in the same zip code it shouldn't make a difference in rates. And since my name is still on the deed for the house it is still a legal residence for me.

I agree...it's tough enough to keep your story straight when telling the truth. "Oh what a wicked web we weave, when first we practice to deceive" -Sir Walter Scott
If this is a general car insurance policy, like with allstate, state farm, etc. I believe it should be covered no matter where parked. But definitely...read the policy. That will at least give you some background info when talking to the company's adjustors.

Sorry to hear about the loss. Most of the time they asked you when you took out the policy where the car is 'garaged' or if it is? Even so, it is all rated by zip code, so it shouldn't make any difference, since it was taken from the same zip as your house. keep us posted. For those of us here in the south bay, what color and model? License number?

Be honest.

My 944S caught on fire when I was driving it. A fuel fire right after I changed the fuel injector seals and replaced an injector. From what I can tell, the fire originated from a the fuel line leading to the fuel rail, and not at one of the injectors. My theory is that the line started to crack when I moved it, and blew open while I was driving.

Still, I told everything to the insurance company, they totalled my car and paid me full value. They also didn't bother ordering an investigation and instead decided to rely on my explanation.

Also, don't be afraid to call your agent (unless you have GEICO) with questions, that is what they are there for.

Did u have Lojack installed or any other theft deterrent devices? I figured with all the electronics in cars these days that they should be quite difficult to steal especially Subaru. Sorry for your loss, hopefully they will catch the perps.

Just report it stolen and the address it was stolen from. Don't volunteer any more than that. File a police report. Most companies will wait 30 days before they pay out. Then the argument can begin between you and your sounds like soon to be ex. The biggest problem I see here is who's name is on the payoff check.

Hmmmm it just so happens that I know of a Brit Ltd that puts anti theft devices into cars much like Lojac except ...what it does is kills the electrical system so the car is rendered inoperable....
