No more Carrera GTs for the US.

The Carrera GT is dead in the US. 2006 cars require 2 stage "smart airbags" and crash testing to prove it. Porsche says not worth it to crash test, and NHTSA has denied their request for a waiver. (Per AutoWeek).

So it looks like the 396 CGTs that have already been sold in the US will be it. The value of those cars is probably going to shoot up.

Darn, I guess that settles it. I'll just have to learn to enjoy life without owning one.

So it looks like the 396 CGTs that have already been sold in the US will be it.

Judging by the number of street crashes in them, we'll be down to 4 or 5 by the end of the decade...

From Autoweek:

~~~
Porsche won't bring in the final 200-plus Carrera GT supercars planned for the United States - and, surprisingly, dealers couldn't be happier.
"I'm thrilled," says Jerry Nelson, owner of Schneider + Nelson Porsche in West Long Branch, N.J. "From the beginning I thought there were too many being built."
"It's a business decision," a Porsche spokesman says. "The cost of engineering the two-stage airbags and recrashing the cars just to make them model-year 2006 cars just doesn't make sense."
Porsche is cutting total output of Carrera GTs to 1,250 units, from 1,500. Most of the 250 dropped units would have gone to the United States, the spokesman says. Since the Carrera GT went into production in January 2004, 396 have been sold in the United States through July.
~~~

I can't believe Porsche would not know about these 2006 requirements from the US government. Did these requirement just spring up out of nowhere on a short notice basis? Sound like Porsche didn't meet their 2005 sales forecast of GT's and this is a good way out...

Either they didn't meet sales expectations or Porsche wants to build up some of that mystical Ferrari valuation karma.

I finally got to Momentum Porsche in Houston this week. They had a black one and a silver one on the floor. I guess you better act quick, I'm sure they'll sell quickly with this news.

You should be proud of your high strung security and environmental legislation policy's.

You will have to do without the CGT same way you didnīt get the turbo during some years or the RS models.

On the bright side you got 85 mph speedometers, less horsepower and that exquisite little funny light for changing gears...

Why can't Porsche sell them as 2005 models? Who says they have to be called 2006 models?

John,

Has not been relevant for me to find out.

But I think itīs somewhere in the region of 4.5 - 5 millions of our money which would be approximately 600-700 000 in your money.

Want me to buy one for ya ??? You can pay me later !

Taxes aren't nearly as bad in Sweden as in Norway and Denmark. The relevant question is, how expensive is a CGT in Norway?

Porsche's web site for Sweden states:

390 000 Euro

A rough conversion would be 390,000 Euro's = $475,065

US MSRP is $448,400.
