Volkswagen R32, Comments?
My brother and his new wife are shopping for a new car for her and may trade her Prelude on a used 2004 R32. Looks like a pretty cool car from the reviews. I was wondering if any others have any experience with these.

It is a pretty cool car... Depends on what you need really... You are getting into "used boxster and 993" territory for the money ! But if it replaces Her Prelude then it's definitely a nice step...
Looks nice, drives well, steering felt a bit heavy to me when I test drove it but I am accustomed to 2WD mid/rear engine Porsches with light steering. Also the power of that VR6 is decent but not "kick in the pants" type... very linear, which is good but not as impressive... Typical VW gearbox too.. Bear in mind that VW is bringing the new golf in R32 guise in the US next year probably...read something in AutoWeek about that... Not a bad car at all, but almost 2x the price of a base model. I think one could Chip a 1.8 T and have a faster car ! NOw if you need 4WD, it's another story ! |

For the money:
If I wanted AWD absolute performance, I'd get an STI. If I wanted luxo style, German hand built quality and AWD I'd get a 993 C4. Having owned many VWs and Audis, I have to say that VAG seems able to combine adequate performance with decent luxury, but they can't do it with reliability or good value, and everything they make seems to weigh 500lbs more than it has to. If I wanted a Rabbit, I'd get an 83-84 GTI. ![]() |
