I concur with Jim, the mom is the key. Another key factor is her friends, if she has biotchy, mean &/or dishonest friends, she's prolly hiding something. Taking a close look at their family, especially siblings can be useful as well. I think that if the person is helpful to the less fortunate, such as volunteer work, that is a big plus.

Successful independent women can be very demanding, my wife nearly scared me off till I realized that it is a byproduct of what I admire about her. We did some counseling to learn to communicate better & everything is peachy (most of the time). I'm sure glad I didn't run.

BTW Dan, I still have your pliers.

My first wife turned into her Mother after 6 months of marriage. Six months later I filed for dissolution of marriage, six months later I was free again.

For the current wife I checked out her entire family...going well so far. :)

I'm not sure about the whole "She'll look like her Mom" thing. The first girl (who turned out quite well) has a fantastically large mother. I've known too many counter-examples to really buy into that prediction technique. Ultimately, of course, virtually all women hit The Great Equalizer of age, and end up looking pretty frumpy by the time they're 40 anyway, so that isn't a good long term descriptor of quality. Character, while far more important, is so difficult to judge. How can you tell how someone will mature? How can you be sure that your wife won't develop into a complete PBH?

Paul, I still have your angle-level-protractor doodad, too. It came in real handy again when I was installing torsion bars on a '70 beetle last weekend. We need to hook up and trade back before I leave the area in October.

Wow,

I'm sure glad I ignored the 'she'll turn into her mom' wisdom. (I'm even more glad that she didn't:))

(Hope you're not reading this MA)

BTW, Dan, mine's 45 and a hot as ever.

Quite a while ago, my old college girlfriend called me. After me, she'd married and divorced another friend of mine, who she now believed was secretly gay (so she told me). She then explained that she'd just broken up with her most recent boyfriend of many years, who had actually confessed to her that he was gay, had always been gay, and that he had hoped that she would turn him straight but she hadn't been woman enough to do the trick. This upset her greatly. Anyway, she wanted to see me again, so we agreed on a local bar. I told a co-worker about this, and for some reason he insisted on accompanying me to the bar. After we'd all been introduced and sat down, my co-worker started hanging on me like the biggest queen you could imagine. I could hardly stop myself from cracking up at the look of horror on the girl's face, as she realized that all the men she'd ever gone out with were actually homosexual. She fled the bar and my buddy and I pretty much died laughing.

Oh man, you scarred her for life!

djmcmath 08-25-2005 10:03 PM

John, that's just plain cruel. I wish I was that evil.

Bobboloo 08-26-2005 01:05 AM

I had an old girlfriend who hated men which made the relationship a bit difficult to say the least.
You see her Dad had cut out of town when she was still pre-teen.
At the time when we were dating she worked in a topless club so she got to see married men making fools of themself on a nightly basis which didn't help things.

Anyway, recently, I ran into her. She had just seperated from her "loser" husband who couldn't hold a job. I asked her what she does now for a living. She said she works for the state....she's a prison guard. I somehow don't think her opinion of men is going to improve anytime soon.

P.S. She didn't look bad but she's just as sour as ever.

vash 08-26-2005 01:05 AM

john, that is damn funny. good thing she didnt call your guys bluff....

my last ex. told me she was moving to SF to live with me. no job, car, plan, $$, degree.... we were already in the process of dumping each other. so we did. the next phonecall was, to tell me she had a STD, and to ask for $$, and to accuse me of cheating. (i didnt) i sprinted to the doc, and got a clean bill of health. phew!

next phone call. tell me she is married, has a son, is 8 month pregnant, and her hubby hits her and is cheating on her. she wonders if she can visit me, and "could we talk?"

so far, no more contact. but i would fake gay to get her off the scent, in a heartbeat!

vash 08-26-2005 01:15 AM

dan. i think the mother thing is a good litmus test. you wont find the exact PH, but you will find out if you are above/below 7.

i dated a cute as a button, elfin looking chick. hispanic and hot. she was fun. i actually moved to austin to live with her. instantly, the sex train came to a grinding halt. she started law school and i decided that i was going back too. so we separated ways. when i coundnt visit that often, she dumped me. all this time i thought we already did break up. but then she tried desperately to get me back. she called me once, "cliff, the doctor gave me medicine, we can get back together now". i still get shivers remembering that sedated voice. but since our relationship was austin, i never met her mom. i finally did. she was a huge, mean, bitter, chainsmoking, cheese eating, couch sitting, OCD, junk collecting, bieotch!. she stalked my poor mom, telling her what a monster of a son she raised. looking back, my ex was heading in the same way. ewwww,,,,,shiver....

a little OT

Here is one quote from a rather liberal fellow that I do agree with!:D I'm to the point now that I'm thinking "log cabin in the forest far,far away from any of 'em". This is not to say that I think it's all their fault either.I'm most likely just a bas_ard.More back on topic, my first real GF in high school, she was one wild and horny girl, we broke up of course and about 15 years later, I saw her in a park with her 3 nasty, dirty kids and her extra 75+ lbs. I've always thought,"that could've been me-scary.

her mother is what she will be in 20-30 years.
Try telling that to both my sisters. :) One is >40 & the other is <40, but neither have turned out anything like mom. Also, you might want to duck if you decide to tell them.

Now, when my wife and her mom are in the same room, I've caught myself putting my arm around her mom thinking it was my wife. They're that close! I make sure I don't pat anyones butt when the in-laws in town (due to a near horrifying mistake).

Thanks for the good laugh. Great story!

When I was a youngster I dated a smoking hot little latina girl who was maybe the best looking girl I ever dated. Maybe 8 - 10 years later I'm in a supermarket when someone calls my name. I didn't even recognize her. 5" tall about 195#, it was enough to make a grown man cry. She still had the face even though it looked inflated. But the rest was gone for good.

TerryBPP 08-26-2005 06:33 AM

Quite the contrary in my case. I ran into a girl I dated right before I met the current love of my life. She was better looking the ever. She was 18 when we dated and now she about 22. Smokin body and great skin.

So you ask, why did I stop seeing her? She was a Hooters girl and had a temper like you wouldn't believe. She also loved the way coke smelled.

Just thought about the time my buddy from Boca was in town and she came over with a co-worker (gorgeous latina). We played drinking as_shole (cards), which turned into strip as_shole, which then turned into very naughty as_shole. God that was a fun night.

Well, now, uhm, ran into two ex's when my wife was along with me. One was a model when I dated her and she still looked wonderful!!! Just one of those things where we came from seperate places and I was given orders to go overseas. Glad my wife is not the jealous kind, but neither of us let on that we used to go out.

The second one my wife could not believe we had dated, neither could I!!! SCARY!!!!!!

But I still see my wife's former long term boyfriend. He and I go kill Bambi together about every other year. Great guy!!! He won't say why they split, neither will she, but I don't care all that much. Neither does his wife. Glad all four of us get along!

As far as dodging the bullet goes, it's almost literal concerning a gf from about 10yrs ago. Met this nice, good looking girl who progressively morphed into an mean, unbalanced individual. I guess she put on a good show initially and her true colors began coming out. Seems she was married to a super abusive a**hole for a number of years. Anyway, I broke it off which she took offense to. She loaded up my XKE's gas tank with sugar and threw a brick through my kitchen window. Thank God that's all I got. Turns out her ex had beat her up once too often and she had blown his brains out with a 9mm Luger. She nailed him at a full run at about 25 yds out in the front lawn. I found this out after I bailed from some friends who knew her while in that bad stage of her life. OOOOH, Scary!!

A shot like that takes practice...

Drago 08-26-2005 01:35 PM

I ran into an ex-GF about three years after our last breakup. I had just dropped out of college and had been on a bit of a bender for a couple of years when I saw her. She acted nice and smug to me...telling me how she was the editor of the local small town news paper and how she married her little brothers best friend...you know, just rubbing my face in it. So yeah, she thought she dodged a bullet.

I had the last laugh though as I ran into her a couple of years later when I was doing much better in my life and she was 50 lbs overweight, had a couple of nasty rugrats hanging on her, no job and divorced.

Dodged!
