Steering column bearing replacement

What is the best way to remove the bearing that stabilizes the steering wheel? I can see no way of removing the bearing without removing the steering column..is that correct? I have the factory service manual for my 78 SC but it doesn't describe how to remove my column...any suggestions are appreciated?

Thanks,
Brett

These pics are definitely useful for the sleeve....do you have any info on removal of the old bearing from the column?

Thanks again,
Brett

Brett:
Welcome to the board. You might get more response by posting your question on the technical bulletinboard rather than the off topic board. Also, try the search option. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I have the impression the old bearing is just pushed on down the steering shaft and the new one is slipped down in the old one's place. I have the feeling I read that somewhere, sometime - a long time ago. Good luck.
