DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS (Louis Alter / Eddie DeLange) Louis Armstrong - 1947 Billie Holiday - 1947 Eddie Condon - 1951 Fats Domino - 1958 Jonah Jones - 1958 Pete Fountain - 1959 Ricky Nelson - 1960 Al Hirt - 1962 Dardanelle - 1985 Alliance Hall Dixieland Band - 1988 Harry Connick Jr. - 1988 Alison Krauss - 1989 Yoshio Toyama & Don Sutton - 1994 Martin Taylor & Chet Atkins - 1995 Tara Darnell - 1996 Janet Carroll - 2000 Manhattan Transfer - 2000 Suede - 2001 Victoria Williams - 2002 Also recorded by: Nat King Cole; Rosemary Clooney; Four Vagabonds; Frankie Laine; Lee Wiley. Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans And miss it each night and day I know I'm not wrong, the feeling's getting stronger The longer I stay away Miss the moss-covered vines, tall sugar pines Where mockingbirds used to sing I'd love to see that old lazy Mississippi Hurrying into Spring The moonlight on the bayou A Creole tune that fills the air I dream about magnolias in bloom And I'm wishin I was there Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans When that's where you left your heart And there's one thing more, I miss the one I care for More than I miss New Orleans

Billie Holiday's version: Do you know what is means to miss New Orleans I miss it, each night and day The longer I stay away Miss the moist covered vines The tall sugar pines Where mocking birds use to sing And I like to see the lazy Mississippi Are hurrying to spring The Mardi Gras memories Of creol tunes that fill the air I dream of oleanders in June And soon I'm wishing that I was there Do you know what is means to miss New Orleans And there is something more I miss the one I care for More than I miss New Orle

Does this count? Busted, down on Bourbon Street, Set up, like a bowling pin, Knocked down, it gets to wearin' thin They just won't let you be A lot of folks in New Orleans would like to get Truckin right about now.

Not to forget: "When The Levee Breaks" If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break, When The Levee Breaks I'll have no place to stay. Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan, Got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home, Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well. Don't it make you feel bad When you're tryin' to find your way home, You don't know which way to go? If you're goin' down South They go no work to do, If you don't know about Chicago. Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good, Now, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good, When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move. All last night sat on the levee and moaned, Thinkin' about me baby and my happy home. Going, going to Chicago... Going to Chicago... Sorry but I can't take you... Going down... going down now... going down....

Bourbon Blues on the street Loose and complete Under skies so smokey blue-green I can't forsake, a dixie dead shake So we dance the sidewalks clean My memory is muddy, whats this river that I'm in New Orleans is sinkin' man and I don't wanna swim Colonel Tom, whats wrong, whats goin' on Can't tie yourself up for a deal He said hey north, your south, shut your big mouth You gotta do what you feel is real Ain't got no picture postcards. ain't got no souveniers My baby, she don't know me when I'm thinkin' bout' those years. Pale as a lightbulb, hangin' on a wire Suckin' up to someone just to stoke the fire Pickin; out the highlights of the scenery Saw a little cloud it looked a little like me I had my hands in the river, my feet back up on the bank Looked up to the Lord above and said Hey man thanks Sometimes I feel so good I gotta scream She said Gordie baby I know exactly whatcha mean She said. She said. I swear to God she said Ahhhhh....No.... Ohhhhh....Yeah! My memory is muddy whats this river that I'm in New orleans is sinkin' man and I don't wanna swim Swim!

PEARL OF THE QUARTER On the water down in New Orleans My baby's the pearl of the quarter She's a charmer like you never seen Singing voulez vous Where the sailor spend his hard-earned pay Red beans and rice for a quarter You can see her almost any day singing voulez vous CHORUS: And if you hear from my Louise Won't you tell her I love her so Please make it clear When her day is done She got a place to go I walked alone down the miracle mile I met my baby by the shine of the martyr She stole my heart with her Cajun smile Singing voulez vous She loved the million dollar words I say She loved the candy and the flowers that I bought her She said she loved me and was on her way Singing voulez vous CHORUS | ||

There is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God I know I'm one My mother was a tailor She sewed my new bluejeans My father was a gamblin' man Down in New Orleans Now the only thing a gambler needs Is a suitcase and trunk And the only time he's satisfied Is when he's on a drunk Oh mother tell your children Not to do what I have done Spend your lives in sin and misery In the House of the Rising Sun Well, I got one foot on the platform The other foot on the train I'm goin' back to New Orleans To wear that ball and chain Well, there is a house in New Orleans They call the Rising Sun And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy And God I know I'm one

Louisiana 1927, Randy Newman What has happened down here is the wind have changed Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain Rained real hard and rained for a real long time Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline The river rose all day The river rose all night Some people got lost in the flood Some people got away alright The river have busted through cleard down to Plaquemines Six feet of water in the streets of Evangelne CHORUS Louisiana, Louisiana They're tyrin' to wash us away They're tryin' to wash us away Louisiana, Louisiana They're tryin' to wash us away They're tryin' to wash us away President Coolidge came down in a railroad train With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has done To this poor crackers land."

The '27 flood was particularly savage, because it was caused by NO bankers etc intentionally breaching a levee to relieve pressure, causing flooding of the folks outside of the city. They promised reparations, and didn't pay. I love the song, however.

bob dylan, down in the flood. Crash on the levee, mama Water's gonna overflow Swamp's gonna rise No boat's gonna row Now, you can train on down To Williams Point You can bust your feet You can rock this joint But oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now ? You're gonna have to find yourself Another best friend, somehow. Now, don't you try an' move me You're just gonna lose There's a crash on the levee And mama, you've been refused Well, it's sugar for sugar And salt for salt If you go down in the flood It's gonna be your own fault Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now ? You're gonna have to find yourself Another best friend, somehow. Well, that high tide's risin' Mama, don't you let me down Pack up your suitcase Mama, don't you make a sound Now, it's king for king Queen for queen It's gonna be the meanest flood That anybody's seen Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now ? You're gonna have to find yourself Another best friend, somehow.

Sort of New Orleans song and I just know the refrain by heart: Good Mornin' America! How Are Ya? Don't ya know me, I'm yer native son. I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans. I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done... Gene-o
