Chertoff: No one saw this coming.
OH PLEASE.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/03/katrina.chertoff/index.html There was an article in Scientific American last year about this exact scenario. Numerous magazines and newspapers have explored this scenario. So when terrorists blow up a dirty bomb in a shipping container in the Long Beach, CA ship yards, is this dolt going to say, "No one say this coming." ????????

there's going to be a lot of revisionist history on this from the Right. I heard Laura Ingraham say over and over that no one knew the storm would be this big.
of course if was the ONLY story on Fox and CNN for 4 days before it hit.

Well, this administration used the old 'nobody saw it coming' excuse for 9/11 as well so they are probably hoping they can cover their asses with this old worn out lie again.

Halliburton hired for storm cleanup The Navy has hired Houston-based Halliburton Co. to restore electric power, repair roofs and remove debris at three naval facilities in Mississippi damaged by Hurricane Katrina. ADVERTISEMENT Halliburton subsidiary KBR will also perform damage assessments at other naval installations in New Orleans as soon as it is safe to do so. KBR was assigned the work under a "construction capabilities" contract awarded in 2004 after a competitive bidding process. The company is not involved in the Army Corps of Engineers' effort to repair New Orleans' levees.

Disasters of all sorts sure do benefit duh-bya's and dick's buddies.
They don't even need to cause them like they did with the iraq war, they can just let their administration's short sightedness and incompetence provide their buddies with ample opportunities for increased profits. |

BTW The Fed prepares for the generalities of a disaster, it's the responsibility of the local authorities to recognize unique circumstances to the area which may adversely affect the recovery.

My post was about right wing talk radio trying to divert blame by saying no one thought the storm would be as big as it was. This is a blatant distortion of the truth. Please respond as to whether you think Laura, and other far Right media, was spot on in her analysis; this would be a more appropriate reply. In terms of preparedness, you only have ask yourself whether or not we have the best, most sophisticated meteorlogical equipment in the world, 4 days of watching the storm, knowledge of the topographical nature of New Orleans, a sizable and readily organized National Guard (more than enough still in the U.S.), and experience based on at least 4 major storms hitting the U.S. every year. From those few pieces of information, you can draw your own conclusions on ANY AND ALL response to the devastation. You also have to wonder what bright bulbs didn't say to themselves..."you know we've got all these closed down military bases that would be great for housing the dispossessed, let's move them there..."

If you want to know my impression, it's that at almost every level of gubmint there was a breakdown. Why not add to your light bulb theory, that NO has (had) school buses and at least some public trans system beforehand, why didn't they move some of these so-called immobile folks out of town, and save some of the buses at the same time. Or, if the mayor is going to send everyone to the Superdome, make sure some of the emergency supplies were staged there, and have backup generators in place in case of loss of power. This doesn't include obvious eventualities like portapotties in the the dome in case the sewer system goes down. No argument with the empty bases. I think the gubment is foolish to charter some cruise ships for housing. That only means a long term bigger bill when the folks trash the ships and we have to pay to refurb them.

I wonder if anyone here remembers Mississippi? How can we blame the lack of response in Mississippi on everyone but W?

I'll say it again....The President of the US is like the captain of a large ship....he turns the wheel of the ship and it takes many miles before the ship even begins to respond...
We in the US have a LARGE FEDERAL BUREAUCRACY let alone the States Bureaucracy....The President is nominally in charge, but Bureaucracys have a mind of their own and are very slow to respond...there even is theory that a Bureaucracy will remove a president from office if he wants to change the system very much...Bureaucracys do resist change.... So for anybody to Politicalize the tragedy down in Nawlins really doesn't know very much about how things really work...and by opening their holes just show how ignorant they really are...

I was gona Open a New Topic on CNN's coverage of the NO debacle....
Diane Grace was almost hysterical...."Where are the busses to evacuate these people." Well honey we don't live in a perfect world and their are simply no more busses to be had.... Diane Grace...."What do you mean those troops are going to be deployed Tommorow, what about today." Honey things just don't happen because we WISH them to...the logistics of the matter dictate the time it takes... Like I said earlier....Bureaucracies are lumbering giants that take time to respond....fill out the form in triplicate then submit..and if their are any mistakes refill out the forms....

Makes you wonder why the Mayor and the Governor didn't use all those Louisiana school busses and bus drivers to evacuate everyone before Katrina struck...since everyone knew this was going to happen.
