Anyone ever date a woman of power?
I was at a party a few weeks ago and met the founder and chairwoman of a major high tech company. I took an interest in her fixing her own Volvo in the "old days" and well, didn't think she took much of an interest in me. (this happens a lot)
Anyway, just like in high school, 3 degrees of separation and I was given her private email address and a note saying she would like to hear from me. Now I'm no shrinking violet, but I've got to admit that her success, position and intelligence were a little overwhelming when we were talking. Other than "be yourself," anyone have any notes, thoughts, advice on a subject like this? Yes, I do feel lame posting this.

This is a common story. Many women in power feel that guys are intimidated by their status- hence they don't get asked out much.
If you can deal with it, go for it. I'll give you the same advice I'd give anyone on a first date- let her talk, don't try to sell yourself, be funny, compliment her politely. Smile at her and make eye contact as you speak to her. If it all goes well, ask for a second date at the end of the first. DO NOT go away and think about it for a week, decide you like her then call. They hate that. Good luck!

Well, it did involve restraints, dog leash and collar. But, I had to pay her so I don't think it counts

Be yourself. You have no idea what she is looking for in a friend/companion/whatever, so there is nothing to sell or prove and anyways you are a pretty ambitious, go-getter type of guy so it's not like you have nothing to talk about.
Tell her about your *several hours a day* addiction to an internet bulletin board run by an auto parts business, always works for me. Just kidding.

![]() Shaun, you obviously have qualities that she's attracted too. Think of it as if she has the same apprehensions you do. Let it cancel out.

My GF is a big fish in the specialty finance operations of a fairly major commercial bank, never been a big deal for me. I get jokes from my friends about the difference in our salaries (we're both 25, and she's making 6 figures... needless to say, like most 25 year olds, I am not) but whatever. More money for the p-car, right?
Although my situation is not totally analagous to yours, I would say the "challenenges" are similar. Just don't let it go to your head the next time you're at a business slanted social gathering and people pay attention to her and ignore you.

Don't be anyone you wouldn't be if she were anyone else.
"Be yourself" is crap - nobody is themselves on a first date. Here's the best advice I can give you - Be a neanderthal. Be a man. Stop being a *ussy. When you're out on a date with a woman, any woman and a decision making moment comes up think to yourself "Self, What would a MAN do here?" Then do that - unless your outlook on life is sensitive and whipped - in that case don't get the zima - do the opposite of that. ![]() My wife is a little higher power than me and very independant. I treat her like a woman and I behave like a man with her. It's true, sometimes she laughs at me (maybe more than sometimes) but at least I'm honest. Be a gentleman, but most importantly in all aspects of life be two things, be respectible and be a man.

Thanks everyone for the great advice, although I almost lost my Filet-o-fish on Speeder's idea of telling her about my life here on PPOT. I wish I could stop, really.
I'm off to Vegas this afternoon for the MAGIC buyer's show and will be sending her a quick note from the show to get the ball rolling. or perhaps if Tabs grants me a buffet audience, I could snap a few pics and list off what we had to eat. that would be sure to impress.

![]() Others are right too. Don't be yourself Shaun. More than likely she wants a sisified man. Someone who wont compete with her. Tone down that whole "Manly" persona you've been sporting. You can pull it off . . .. pretty yourself up, and be her hottie. Oh . .tell her your *into* "little girls clothes,' . . .even if that seems a bit of a reach. ![]() Seriously; every woman has a different agenda . . . just figure it out as it goes. You'll either click, or not. (tho' these post of yours ARE entertaining) ![]()

When she gets in your car, say "Don't look back. I think we're being tailed." Then take high speed evasive maneuvers.
Be sullen, brooding and deeply troubled. Oh, and dangerous, very, very dangerous. They love that.

My ex- became a big sneeze in the movie business. I've also dated a major player in real estate and a moderately popular actress/comedienne.
The bottom line for all of them is that they had to 'be men' in order to get things done in their respective businesses and really needed to 'be women' in private -- some to the point of appreciating mild B&D(!) If it's your nature to take charge on dates or weekend getaways, do so without concern for stepping on her toes. You might be pleasantly surprised.

My advice? ENJOY IT! Seriously. This may be the best date you've ever been on. I dated a women who was part of the team that established the original protocols for data encryption on the internet. So yes, unlike Al Gore, she really was one of the people who "invented" the internet. Super duper smarty. Later, she started her own internet startup and is currently CEO. Frickin' amazing g/f. She was smart, funny, self-aware, and had her **** together. She had her own home, cars, etc. I never had to pay her bills, bail her out of jail, fix her broken whatever, find a place for her to live, etc etc. Our relationship was based entirely on liking each other - not supporting her. A smart, successful woman is the ultimate. Anything less is unacceptable.
Sadly, she dumped me. In the end, we had differing life goals. My loss. She found a dude with similar goals and married him. We still occasionally keep in touch as friends and I occasionally refer business contacts to her. I'd like to see her have even more success. And fortunately I suspect she will with or without my help.

"Hi, I'm Shaun. I am an entrepeneur who recently started a company whose goal is to improve the self-esteem of young girls through fashion. Shall I drive you home in one of my three Porsches?"
Why in the world should a guy with this "sales story" ever feel intimidated by anyone????? ![]() ![]() ![]()
