Places to donate for Hurrican Relief

I just went to the Red Cross website. All of the TV reports say they are at the front of the relief effort. Plus I went to the Whitehouse.gov website and they suggested giving to the Red Cross as well. Here is their website...

http://www.redcross.org

You can also go here...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/philanthropy/red-cross.html

Both websites send funds to the Red Cross. I heard Clinton/Bush on the TV last night saying that each state (TX, LA, and MS) is going to set up a fund for donations. But so far the Whitehouse.gov website only mentions the Red Cross.

As a group of Porsche owners, we are almost by definition affluent and successful. And therefore our collective contribution can probably have more impact than the efforts of most other American communities.

From Thom's link:

"The history is clear, the Red Cross and other large so-called charities are in actual fact front group collection agencies for the military industrial complex.

Many informed historians have even alleged that the Red Cross was used as a Skull and Bones cover to overthrow The Russian Czar and pave the way for the rise of the Bolsheviks."

Wow!

Yeah, I hadn't read down that far. The bits about misappropriation of fund are common knowledge though. After every scandal, the Red Cross (and United Way, etc) doing the re-org dance, say they've thrown out the bad apples, promise not to do it again, etc...

Years ago I did a lot of IT work with various blood banks across the country. None of them had anything nice to say about the Red Cross.

Like I said in another thread. I went to church last night to find out what they are doing. I suggest you call your local corner church and find out what you can do.

I was amazed to find out a lot of churches are renting U-hauls and heading up to the Panhandle loaded up with cash, food, water clothing and other supplies. A lot of churches are also organizing to help get someplace to stay for displaced families so they can get back on their feet.

One local congregation here has put together $7,000 and a truckload of provisions and left this morning for the panhandle.

Look locally it might be better spent. I charged $200 to the Red Cross and now regret it. I donted a substancial amount of money to my church and I am 100% sure it is going to the gulf and being used well.

I donated and then posted the link because I trusted the source (whitehouse.gov). If I am wong, then by all means post better links. I still have more $$ to give. No need to put it all in one place - especially if the red cross is suspect.

Like I said, if any community is in a position to make a financial difference, it is us.

www.charitynavigator.com is a very reputable organization that rates charities. The American Red Cross is a four star charity. No organization is perfect, but the Red Cross is still a good choice for our donations.

I donated to the American Red Cross yesterday. Also, check to see if your employer has a matching gift program - many have set up special matching programs for Katrina relief, effectively doubling the contribution made.

Most reports I've seen to date are encouraging $$ donations only at this time. Donations of clothing, etc. are being discouraged at the moment as it might jeopardize the immediate efforts of getting water, food and shelter to those in need.

Another website devoted to helping the victims. This one is set up by former Presidents Clinton and Bush.

I donated last week and also have more to give. I hope all of us on OT will give what they can. The need won't be over when New Orleans is empty. There's several hundred thousand refugees with literally nothing but what they were wearing, and lots of them are the poorest Americans who just don't have financial resources. For many of them, the next few months will make the difference between getting back on their feet - or not.
