NO: Sean Penn To The Rescue!

Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks
From correspondents in New Orleans
05sep05

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

What exactly is the difference between a "personal photographer" and just a photographer? One is a photojournalist who tags along w/ the famous person in NO, (where just about every serious PJ in the world is right now), and the other is a propaganda term for Sean Penn haters?

Say what you will, but when "liberals" on this board are being challenged to "go down to NO and help rescue people", here is one liberal who puts his $$ where his mouth is. Too bad he got a leaky boat, (can't imagine that there is a boat shortage down there right now),, and true he might not know what he is doing, but he has more balls and heart than anyone else I know in his personal as well as creative life.

928ram 09-06-2005 02:23 PM

Umm, how about a photo hired and paid for by Penn to take pictures of him. Could be but doesn't have to be a photojournalist; simple a phog for hire, like a papparazzi (sp) that he already knew.

But I agree; good on him for actually being there, liberal or not. Fact is, even if he only handed out one bottle of water and save no one, being there further raises awareness and likely got some of his fans to contribute. Every bit helps.

"We were pulling drowning people out of the water, it's the ultimate distress and human suffering ... dead bodies," he told GMTV.

Penn said he had spent nine hours on Monday searching the water for people and during all that time he saw just three boats carrying US officials.

"There are people that are dying right now and I mean babies and old people and everybody in between - they're dying. There are people dying and (the US government are) not putting the boats in the water, I think that's criminal negligence. I don't think anybody ever anticipated the criminal negligence of the Bush administration in this situation."

The US authorities were also castigated by British bus driver Ged Scott, from Wallasey, Merseyside, who was on holiday in the New Orleans area.

He stayed in the Ramada Hotel during and after the devastation with his wife, Sandra, and seven-year-old son Ronan. At one stage, Mr Scott, 36, had to wade through filthy water to barricade the hotel doors against looters.

He told the Liverpool Daily Post: "I couldn't describe how bad the authorities were. Just little things like taking photographs of us, as we are standing on the roof waving for help, for their own little snapshot albums.

"At one point, there were a load of girls on the roof of the hotel saying 'Can you help us?' and the policemen said 'Show us what you've got' and made signs for them to lift their T-shirts. When the girls refused, they said 'Fine' and motored off down the road in their boat."

bryanthompson 09-06-2005 02:29 PM

Rove sabatoged the boat and planted the photographer so that Penn would look like even MORE of a dolt. Simple explanation.

dd74 09-06-2005 02:36 PM

"Whatever I can do to help."
That sort of tells the whole story, doesn't it?

Why is that necessary? For either a liberal or a conservative? (I don't see how this is a liberal or conservative issue).

You think that he has to pay a photographer to take his picture in NO right now? Think about that one for a minute.

island911 09-06-2005 02:49 PM

Wouldn't the "personal photographer" be in Seans boat?

(read: I think that pic came from another source.)

speeder 09-06-2005 02:55 PM

Yes, I know what the term "personal photographer" means in this context, but I can also see through blatant propaganda. Who came up w/ that term for this "news story"? Bill O'Reilly? Limpballs?

I normally don't blow my anonymity so to speak on this board, but I've known him for 23 years and he doesn't pay photographers to take his picture. That's absurd. A ******* Oscar winning actor?

It's just a slander job from the slimiest faction that the U.S. has ever seen. Love him or hate him, depending on your politics, but he has more personal integrity than anyone I've ever met and is the most down-to-earth as well. Absolutely zero BS and follows his consience WHEREVER it takes him w/o consideration of bad press, etc...

Yeah, and mounting his own effort in his boat of holes is what type of negligence? --what an idiot.

It's like he throws his own steaming turds at Bush to paint Bush as the filthy animal.

island911 09-06-2005 02:59 PM

So Denis, are you saying that Sean allows any photographer access? . .. or does he have his personal (eh'em) favorites?

Oh, man that image is priceless. :D

Probably not to get his picture in the press, maybe to have a photog to tag along on his complete journey.

I am suprised though that You would would assume that it was all about pics of him??? Even though I've seen pics of Penn wielding a camera himself in the past, I don't see what would be so far outside of the realm of possibilities that he would hire a pro to document the whole excursion. Maybe he's going to publish a book or something documenting the storm.

I'm sure your thinking of Hugh Jorgen. He was the porn star.

island911 09-06-2005 04:51 PM

:D thanks, craigster.

I should pay more attention to these names.

...especially for visits down to LA. Seem "who" is all anyone talks about down there. --WHo's in, who's out. I suspect Hugh Jorgen is in-and-out a lot.

So; Sean Penn . ..

"In" or "out" ?

Well, it sort of looks like Sean's grasping hold of a big orange-tipped Steeley Dan, and the facial hair with Ray Bans looks acutely Village People.

So I vote "in" but through the back door. At least for this shot.

Of course someone in that boat should tell him: "Antree (sp?). This river don't go to Antree. This river don't go nowhere...":D

I was telling the wife about his follies. I mean he forgets to put the drain plug in the boat. (I have done it as well) then the boat does not start. (Been there done that, very frustrating) then he decided to row around looking to save lives.

My wife commented, "Its the thought that counts".

If he saves one person that is 1 more than I am saving sitting in front of my computer.

He just went up a notch as far as I am concerned. He is risking his health just being there. Possibly his life if he meets some "boat jackers".

cegerer 09-06-2005 06:36 PM

Is that a real story? If so, that's the funniest friggin' thing I've seen in a long time! My friend's 12-year old son forgot to put the drain plug in their duck boat too and they nearly sank. Being 12, he had an excuse. OTOH, maybe Spicolli burned a couple of fat ones before boarding and forgot the plug .......

<i>"Alls I need is some tasty waves and a cool buzz..." </i> How ironic.

Im tired of this fu**ing guy. First the crap with Iraq and now this. What an attention whore.

speeder 09-06-2005 07:40 PM

Yeah, he doesn't get much attention in this world. That would explain the row boat in NO.

Whatever.

And my favorite porn star name is Barry McCochenor.

amity914 09-06-2005 07:46 PM

I truely respect ANYONE that is helping save lives right now. There are people that are suffering and anyone that is helping the effort to save them are hero's in my book. People from celebrities to our national guard troops, to the NOPD to the average joe that are helping right now deserve our highest respect.

Hiedi

David 09-06-2005 08:31 PM

I give him credit for doing something. I still haven't gotten over Mule's friend's story about going in early. There are some real heros out there.

pwd72s 09-06-2005 10:18 PM

Gee, all I saw here on Channel 8, our local NBC affiliate, was a 10 second bit of Penn saying he'd rescued a dozen or so people, then *****ing about a "lack of federal response". Gee,why would our local TV show that? Oh..I keep forgetting: "It's Bush's fault"...

fintstone 09-06-2005 10:32 PM

One would suspect that if he actually "saved" anyone...his "personal photographer" would have recorded it for us (somewhat kerryesque). I guess he still has time to stage some photos...

island911 09-06-2005 10:57 PM

LOL -- it's reinactment time.

'Act 2, Take 2; Sean acting like a hero, whilst cursing Bush. (let's get it right this time people) SNAP.

craigster59 09-06-2005 11:05 PM

" And Sean...Babe... Don't look so constipated during the cup toss. Fling it.....don't dump it! O.K.... Roll sound.

911pcars 09-07-2005 12:00 AM

Seems like we have a few photo reviewers who feel fairly smug from the comfort of their Barca Loungers, cigars and Red Bull drink.

I doubt many of us would be down there (publicity hounds or not) even at a safe distance much less mucking around in the fecal soup they used to call N.O. in search of survivors. Bravo to anyone who attempts it, and I don't give special consideration to celebrities (unless it's Catherine Zeta Jones).

As an aside; pretty soon, a huge volume of that wonderful, bio-hazardous, chemical mix of human and animal waste, battery acid, DOT 3/4/5 brake fluid, gasoline, diesel and Mobil 1, pesticides, moth balls, bleach and cleaning solutions and industrial efluent will be pumped into the Atlantic to destroy whatever sea life and food source there is. There goes another source of jobs and another splotch on our environment.

Godzilla, created by and immune to careless nuclear weapons testing, would be hard pressed to wreck any havoc were he to try wading into N.O. at the moment.

Amazing what a little unattentiveness on the part of some civil servants can produce.

Sherwood

PS: That was a little unfair. Our bureaucrats were not entirely to blame for Katrina.

island911 09-07-2005 12:09 AM

Yeah it is pretty coool that Sean made the extra effort, braving the cesspool, and boat-jackers (note his bullet-proof vest) . . alll to strengthen his possition to bash Bush. He's true a hero.

It would be great if more smug Barca Lounger Liberals would take similar risks, before bashing Bush.:p

Eric Coffey 09-07-2005 12:34 AM

Leaky "woodlands camo" swamp boat: $3000.
Plastic keg cup: $.25.
Being the only pussy in the boat wearing Kevlar: PRICELESS.

Please, you make it sound like this guy is hot, he's old news. So no, he wouldn't be anywhere near the headlines or even IN the papers without this.

That said, he may have balls AND be an idiot. They are not mutually exclusive.
